NED IRISH NINE ROCKEFELLER PLAZA NEw YORK, N.Y. March 6,1959 Dr.forrest CG. Allen Director of lhysical Education University of kansas Lawrence,Kan. , Dear Doc, I have just returned from the Southern Confermace tourney where I had a very pleasant time with one of your former pupils ,Dr. Sermon. Got your note in reference to the Conference ruling and wish to point out a factor that seems to be generally misunderstood throughout the country. Madison Square Garden is the HOM® court of New York City institutions and is srecifically designated as such ‘by all New York institutions when they play on tiat court. The only institution which does not do this is Columbia. The seven other local colleges and universities use the Garden court and have the same control over the conduct of games there as in their own gyms, which as you know are inadequate for intercollegiate contests of any sort but the most minor games. All contests between New York schools and schools in conferences having a rule such as the Western Conference are arranged between the institutions and contracts are with such institutions, not with an individual or the Madison Square Garden Corporation. My status is simply one in the nature of a booking agent in allotting dates to the local schools and suggesting opponents who might be receptive to games on dates which they have use of the Garden floor. The two games are played each night in the nature of insurance against the possibility that one of the games might not be adecuate to attract sufficient interest to warrant the seating capacity of the Gerdene Trust that this clears up your doubts regarding the ruling of the Conference on home floors. Sincerely yours, ie a Yirector of Basketball Madison Sguare Garden.
