Dear Dr. Allen,

After several unavoidable delays, I examined
Ed Rickel today. Except for second degree flat feet
with metatarsalgia, he is in good condition.

On the basis of his physician's request,
I am recommending no gym this semester. It should be
only a matter of a short time before he is in the Army
where he can exercise his feet. He is now wearing
arch support shoes which, in my opinion, benefit no
one except the manufacturer. I have recommended
metatarsal bars, elevate heels on inside, and foot
exercise.

It occurred to me that if we did not have a
war occasionally to put men on their feet we would
finally degenerate into a race of seals, with flippers
for feet.

The matter of arranging a special gym class
for the men with weak feet has been discussed with
Lt. Thompson and Dr. F. Se Allen. The latter is willing
to give them gone personal supervision to get then
started on special foot Covereping exercises.

The selection of a period weperise or periods
when men named on the attached list can mest regularly
at the gym will have to be decided between you and
Dee Allene If you will notify him when the.men can be
at the gym, preferebly in one class or not more than
two, he will see thet they sre started on the oxorcises
which should be of some benefit in returning these men
to duty.

and I discussed the matter of opening the swimming pool.

Inasmuch as the pool is overloaded with the
demands of both the Army and the Navy we. suggest that
during the winter. swimming classes be opened only to
Army trainees who cannot pass swimming requirements and
the Navy trainees who cannot meet the swimming require-
ments who will be leaving the campus within the next
few months. 3
