January 17, 1945. Capt. Fred G. Heinlen, Asst. Direotor of Physical Training, Headquarters Selman Field, Monroe, Lae Dear Captain Heinlen: It was gracious of you to write me as you did in your January 15th letter. I an very happy thas your ‘appraisal of Otto Schnellbacher as a soldier and an ath- lete is very high. We are very fond of Schnellbacher, as he is a great Dutchman. He is a competitor and a real gentleman. I congratulate you also on the fine record that your outfit made. Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, FCA:AH Varsity Basketball Coach. HEADQUARTERS SELMAN FIELD MONROE, LOUISIANA 15 January 195 Dr. Forrest C. Allen, Director of Basketball University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr, Allen: I thought you might be interested in hearing about one of your boys, Otto Schnellbacker. He has just left our field to enter Bombardier's School but while he was here he did a fine job as a soldier and as an athlete, He was the outstanding boy on our football team this year, His defensive end play and his pass catching ability was the best any of us have ever seen around here. He played the last five ball games we had and made the all~opponent team of each of the five clubs, In addition to that he made the first team of the all-sovthern service team, a real honor when one realizes how many service teams played football in the south last season, . Because of his duties, we had Schnellbacker just for our last four basketball games, He was the big factor in winning all four, averaging 22 points per game against pretty fair opposition. Now that he has gone, things will be rough. While he was here, I really looked like a good coach. This boy is a real credit to the University of Kansas and the coaching staff. He was well liked and was a credit to the service, the post, and Selmants athletic teams, We are sorry that he has left Selman Field. Sincerely yours, Lad J eu FRED G. Hello Dr. Allen: a Received the latest copy of the Rebounds only this morning and received a good deal of enjoyment upon reading it. I really laughed ak ee stories of the visit with Mr. Tunis and the squirrel yarn. Those were two good ones both in being a story and telling a point. Had been wondering what OB’ Dean's work was owen iihLy and SO was interested in your description and information about him. I wish they would start something like that over here. It sounds like a very good set-up to me. Dean will sure have some big ones to tell you upon his return. ee See by the Rebounds that Vance Hall has pulled into this 7 be section of the country. I used to be at his APO on DetachedService ff so I know where he is and will sure be on the Lookout Tor him from now on. I would really like to see an ol' Kansas man. Would like to see Mrs. Hulteen's husband too but have never been to his APO yet. Noticed several references to the nucleus of the '43 team who may return and play ball again after the war is finished. I never got to see them play but I. am counting on watching them run through the Bi@*Six, the NCAA, and running the winners of the Madison Square Garden tourney right out of the Garden upon tneir return to the hardwood floor. I know there are several thousand o1' K.U. men who want to see the same thing too. tI was over in Burma from the first of the year until two weeks ago. Was servicing the same kind of outfits that J onnny Pfitach belongs to. That was a good picture of him and his birthday sign. I was re- cently transferred into a newly formed organization and through a couple of good breaks took over the job of Supply Sgt this past week so I have rather @ sort of "position" these days. I took the job on the assumption that after about four months I would be rotating home and be in a good position to get away but I figured without consulting the boys in Europe and since they have wound things up there, rotation will soon cease. Was sure glad the war finally ended in one section although it may take some time to see the complete finish. IT have put in 21 months here so I'm ready to see the moving orders any time. When I was stationed in Burma, I was in one place about a month that had a basketball court rigged up with lights and had an eleven team league going. Played four nights a week and the games were well attended every night. I got to referring several games an week and had one good experience to report. One evening while waiting for the second game to ak which I was going to work, I overheard a fellow with a Brooklyn accent relating some basketball experiences and I caugt the word Kansas so I eavesdropned on the conversation. He was telling a group of friends about how he had made an All-American from Kansas look like a raw rookie. I was immediately interested so broke into the talking by asking the Kansas's man's name. It was one I had never heard before but I remained silent and heard him finish his sory. Upon taking the court to start the ball game, I notice this fellow is to play on one of the teams. Naturally Ikept an eye on him all through the game and soon saw he was strictly all talk. After the game, 1 app- roached him and patting him the, back, remarked "bud, you couldn't even play intramural ball at Kansas". He immediately knew what I was referring to and started to back track but I never gave him a chance and _ really told him off. Anybody talking about Kansas doesn't neéd to say anything about Kansas that is not true to me because I'm always ready to back Kansas in anything. I'm like the Brooklyn fans, its okay to mention the bad spots among loyal rooters But just let some outsider say one word and we're all¥ over him from all sides. I have taken enough of your time for now so will bring this to a@ quick close. I do wish you would change my mailing address to the new one on the envelope so I won't miss any copies of the Rebounds. Best regards to you all and continued good luck. Fee tee January 17, 1945. ir. We Je Howland, Superintendent of Schools, Nortonville, Kansas. Dear Superintendent Howland: Time was up before the foul was called. ‘There was a slight difference in thé second hands of the two clocks. The rules say that the clock that is official, of course, shall determine the tims, and the referee did not hear the signal ending the game.. _ Therefore a foul made after the game would not be recognized. That was the reason. Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, FOAs4 Hi 2 Varsity Basketball Coach. H. H. THORNBURGH, Clerk BARNEY McCOY, Director EARL WEISHAAR, Treas.
