A few years ago we got in a very unpleasant | gituation due to the fact that one of the coaches rushed one of the boys who later proved to be a very fine athlete. ‘Phe bad feeling engendered by this situation caused a rule to be put into effect, that no coaches should have any part in the rushing ef any student. ion While Bobby was in school, of course, it could be overlooked as that was his individual act. But with no children in school at the present time it would be badly misconstrued. , | J trust that you will be successful in finding a Suitable place. : : With ell good wishes, I am * Fraternally yours, Director of Physical Education, | Varsity Basketball Coach. ae 6 wicca. Charlie Black, about whom I wrote you, did not knew of the quota for enlistment in time and went to Kansas City and enlisted in the Cadet Aviation reserve. He passed his mental test with a grade of 108, when 84 was passing, and passed his physical examination at Fort Leavenworth with an excellent rating. He is now waiting to be sworn in, which will be some time this week, in Kangas City. I do thank you for your kindness, and I congratulate you and the University in the action permitting many of these boys to enlist here who doubtless would be forced into the draft if they had to wait until school opened in the fall. We are pleying basketball in Omaha on December 15 and I would be glad to have you and your family as my guests at that time. If you can accept we will be happy to I don't know at the present time what hotel we wi at, but I imagine it will be the Pontenelle. HEADQUARTERS SEVENTH SERVICE COMMAND, SOS, Office of the Civilian Components Officer, Omaha, Nebraska, August 9, 1942. Professor Forrest C. Allen, Department of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Professor Allen: There was sent to the University, by telegram last Thursday, its quotas for the enlistment in the Army Enlisted Reserve Corps of its qualified students. This telegram was followed the next day by a letter giving details. Under this authorization you should be able to take care of your man Black, to whom reference was made in your letter of August 3rd, and deserving as a member of your basketball team. Incidentally, I trust that you have your usual outstanding team. I have not seen your brother since the days he was at Fort $111, when we talked much of you and your leadership in the development of basketball. In fact, I havn't the slightest idea where he is stationed at the present time, but I know wherever it may be, he is doing a fine job. From this you can gather that I am a fan. ry cordially yo W.
