Mr. Forrest Allen University of Sensas Lawrence, Kansas Iola, Kansas Dec. 19, 1942 Dear Sir: I wish to acknowledge receipt of your statements concerning the merits of walking. Thank you kindly. They were very helpful. Respectfully, “yy eto X. Melvin L. Hayés M March 24, 1943 Mr. Arthur F. Hughes, St. Joseph News-Press St. Joseph, Missouri § Dear Art: i Thanks for sending me the clipp in the Gene Sullivan's Wise Owl colum, I appreciate all the nice things Gene had to say about me, bit this is once where he is as substantially correct as a fellow I heard about in describing to his friend the fact that John Doe, his friend, madea hundred thousand dollars in one year in a shirtwaist factory in Baltimore, Maryland, He said, "Isn't that right, Bill?" "Well, “ Bill said, "That is sub- stantially correct. Instead of Bal re, Maryland, It was Kansas City, and instead of q shirtwaist factory it was \an overall factory, and instead of making a hundred thousand dollars the first year he lost a hundred thousand dollars the first year." : Ae | I can just tell you on the record and off the record that I never have been as happy as during the past seven years when I have had nothing to do with the administration of athletics here at the University of Kansas. You have heard about the @ellow that met Bill Jones going down town, and he said, "I think I should tell you, Bill, that I just came through your neighborhood and I saw a big, striped, Bengal tiger jump in the kitchen window of your house. I thought maybe you would want to hurry out there and protect your wife.” | Bill said, "Now, listen. That tiger got in there and he can just get out the best way he can." That is the way with me. I got in there once and I am out, and I am not getting back. Some people really feel that a fellow would jump into a job like that if it were offered him. Well, I am not one of those fellows that cares for as much grief as that type of job can muster. In the fall of 1920 I coached the football team with not one penny of additional salary. In December, 19]9, I took over basketball with no increase in salary. In 1921 I started the building of the stadium, and in 1923 I founded the Kansas Relays. My basketball teams have been fairly successful, yet when I was endeavoring to build up a football team because the basketball team was winning many of my pseudo-friends were declaring that I cared nothing for football. Well, after having done all those things I have arrived at an age that convinces me it isn't worth a candle and I wouldii't take the gob at twice the salary ° You are dealing with an emotional, slap-happy, crackpot bunch of fa- naties who know all about winning football games. So not for my peace of mind or any money that enyone might gather up in an endeavor to tempt me. It just wouldn't work. So thank Gene for his kind words, but these are not idle statements. They are facts. Very cordially yours, ¢ ST. JOSEPH NEWS-PRESS AFTERNOON AND SUNDAY St. Joseph Gazette MORNING C.M.PALMER, PRESIDENT HENRY D. BRADLEY, PuBtisHer ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI EDITORIAL ROOMS ARTHUR V. BURROWES, EDITOR March 16 Dear Phog; Th€ought that you might be interested in this clipping, Sincerely Arthur F.Hughes WISE OWL By GENE SULLIVAN News-Press Sports Editor GWINN HENRY’S SUCCESSOR We have the perfect successor to Gwinn Henry as the head football coach at the ‘Uni- | versity of Kansas. He is Dr, F. GC, (Phog) | Allen, | who needs no introduction to readers of sports pages. Doctor Allen is eminently qualified for the position. We mean it. In the rather dim and distant past Doctor Allen proved | his ability as a football coach at Kansas. In the pulsating present he has shown a.knack of attracting young men of marked basketball talent to Mount Oread, The same talent-getting flair has been dem- | onstrated by few football coaches in the entire history of the gridiron | sport up at Lawrence on the Kaw. Yes, sir, Phog Allen is the man who should have the job. Phog Allen would get Kansas a winner in football just as he has given the Jayhawks a long succession of champions in basketball. Phog is that kind of coach. To be a success in the peculiar profession of preparing young men for athletic combat you have to be a crank for perfection, a practical psychologist, a politician, a father confessor, and a showman who combines the better theories of P. T, Barnum and Billy Rose with a touch of mortgage-holding villain of the old mellerdrammers. And that, ladies and gen- ‘ tlemen, is Phog Allen, the maker of bas- ketball champions, It would be no trick for Phog to transfer these talents to the football department. He knows the gundamentals of that game almost. as well as he understands the basic principles of basketball. Giv- ing the grid sport his full time and attention, he'd be a wow. Of course he’d have to do this in season because no school would be silly enough to suggest that a Phog Allen give up basketball coaching. That would be like asking MacArthur to become R. O. T, C. instructor at Paducah High School. z ee But Phog could find the time for both jobs. Didn’t Phog Allen | he only recently say that the era of the two-hour-a-day coach was | Passing? And while the Kansas board of regents is handing over the football coaching reins to Phog it should also reinstate him as athletic director. This, of course, would just be a technicality anyway. Being shorn of that authority didn’t slow up Phog one whit. He continued to attack the N. C. A. A. on all fronts, predict the end of intercollegiate football within a decade and ask pointed questions of young men who moved from one Big Six school to another in his best athletic direc- tor manner while being only the Jayhawks’ head basketball coach, But we still cling to the theory that the jobs of head _football coach and athletic director should always be invested in one man and we make no exception a the case of Phog. Allen. We realize, of course, that this suggestion will meet with little support in many sections of the University of Kansas Alumni Asso- ciation. Some of those boys have taken a very stubborn attitude toward Phog.. They’ve blamed him for everything bad that has hap- | pened in Douglas County with the exception of the sack of Lawrence. | Phog got out from under the blame for that by claiming he was speak- ing ata high school athletic banquet that night and was busy work-| ing his way through the chicken a la king when Quantrell and his boys worked their version of the T formation on the Kansans. However, university authorities could go farther and do worse than name Phog Allen athletic director and head football coach. And it is just not because competent foot- ball coaches are hard to find in a country at war, Everything Phog Allen does he does right. There are no halfway meas- ures with him. And a man who operates on that principle : ~ean’t heip but be a success regardless ‘of what he is doing. The Jayhawks have long been seeking a football Moses. Now they can get one right on their own front doorstep. Let them forget their Rock-Chalk for a time and have for their _new battle cry, “Pulverize 7Em With Phog!”’ Jenuary 11, 1943. fo Whom It May Concern: Marshall Hulett, who is.employed by the. When you gét into this "important" stuff that is kind of out of my league; but I will give you a minor leaguer's opinion on anything that affects the man I think has done more for boys in this section of the country than any other athletic man. We certainly had a grand time as your guests at Madison Square Garden, and Lacy appreciated very much the opportunity to keep Chuck with him over- night. I will be seeing you on the 16th, and of course we probably will miss you on the:29th of Janu- ary which I will hate to do -= but that is the date of the Kansas Day celebration. However, I can get back for the 30th, and it is just possible I may get through in time to catch a train if they are on schedule, to see the game the 29th. I hate like the devil to miss your basketball games, and I have to figure up some way to get up to Lawrence, even if it means putting the car up for a month so I can drive up. Thanks a lot for all the fine things you say about me, and don't hesitate to call on me any time. With kindest regards and best wishes, I am Sincerely yours, Sat THE KANSAS CITY STAR.
