OREGON STATE COLLEGE CORVALLIS, OREGON DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION FOR MEN January 8, 1942 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Director of Physical Education and Recreation The University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dector Allen: About a month ago I mailed you for verification a catalogue analysis of your graduate major in physical education and as yet it has not been returned, I know that at this time of the year you have been extremely busy with the press of duties and have over- looked this matter, My findings on graduate practices in physical education will be published shortly and your institution will be listed, It is vitally important that your institution be correctly portrayed and I know you will welcome the opportunity of being able to check over the analysis I have already made of your school from your catalogue. If for any reason you need another analysis blank, please let me know immediately and one will be sent you. If possible, I would like the blanks that I sent you returned to me not later than January 26th. Thanking you in advance for cooperating in this matter, I remain Sincerely yours, © ack E, Hewitt JEH:H Associate Professor of Physical Education OREGON STATE COLLEGE CORVALLIS, OREGON Dr. Forrest C. Allen Division of Physical Education and Recreation The University of Kansas Dear Sir: This is a definite attempt to get detailed information concerning graduate work in physical education from all of the institutions of the United States offer.- ing graduate degrees on the master's and doctor’s levels, This graduate work mur’ be done in physical education or in physical education combined with either hes iub or recreation. The institutions offering this work must grant a master’s or doc- torts degree. This study does not concern itself with those institutions which offer graduate work only and no high degree. An effort has been made to get all the information possible from the printed literature, eatalogs, etc., without troubling anyone for help in the collection of this information. Those catalogs which will be in force for the fall of 1941 have been carefully analyzed for the information they contain. However, many vital mat- ters of utmost importance are not always obtainable from printed literature and for this reason it has been necessary to leave some pertinent questions in the enclosed questionnaire blank to be filled in by the recipient. It is important that each institution have an opportunity to go over the inter- pretation made for that institution, and either correct or add important points not adequately treated. The writer guarantees to furnish each institution helping with the survey a mimeographed summary of his findings, If a report is desired, check the line, "I would like summary of this report," on the first page of the question- naire, The purposes of this study in brief are: To determine what degrees are offered on the greduate level in physical educa- tion, titles of the graduate major, controlling agencies, basic purposes of gredu- ate work, and the evaluation of the importances of these purposes; training and experience of staff, teaching load, ete, To ascertain departmental and institutional requirements for various higher degrees with physical education specialization, e.g. residence, units, grades, thesis and examination requirements, etc.; to determine the availability of gredu- ate facilities, e.g. library and laboratory, etc. I believe such a study at this time will have considerable importance in clari- fying the general understanding of practices and purposes in graduate work in physi- cal education. I believe that it is much needed, Please feel free to add any com- ments you wish on the last page of the analysis. Enclose the contents in the self-addressed stamped envelope and, if possible, I would appreciate having this material returned not later than December 1, 1941. Thenking you for your cooperation in this matter, I remain incerely youss, ack E, Hewitt Associate Professor of Physical Education JEH:H Encl. P,S. Milton and his wife had a dance at the Country Club and they asked us to keep their little three~year~old tot. We spent the evening at home. I am gled that you have received the letters concerning Wilsob Houts. As I told you in my previous letter, I had Wilson work here at the University so that I eould recommend him for a better job if he straightens up. Wilson has ene other regrettable fault in addi- tion to his drinking, and that is his desire for gambling. We told one of the fellows here that he could make more money gambling in Kansas City than he could by working. This might have been said in _ the way of a jest, but I am trying to present all of his wealmesses to you so that you can be in a better position to help hin. Mr. Joe estwood Proprietor Blue Valley Foundry 1711 Gast 12th St. Kensas City, Ho. Dear Joe, I have been working with my good friend, Harley (Mud) Davis, who has been helping a young man named Wilson Houts find em- ployment. Wilson is the son of the Bean of Women at the Central Missouri State Teachers College, Warrensburg, Ho. The son that we lost in 1925, Forrest, Jr., and Wilson were boy-hood friends when I was coaching at Warrensburg from 1912- 1919. This young man has hed en unfortunate experience as an _@lehoholic. I took him to St. Joseph to the state hospital there right after labor day and he got out about two weeks ago. He is now not drinking and I have given him work here at the University endeavoring te build his morale and increase his physical es well as his mental stawine. . Harley Davis suggests that if I would write you you might be — able to give him an opportunity for work if and when he is able to do the job fer youe I would appreciate it, Joe, if such a thing could be possible.
