Dear Dr. Allen: In March 1938 I wrote you from Beverly, Kansas about the control of athletes foot in our school. You went to considerable trouble to outline a plan for us to follow, We took your advice about toughing the feet and keeping the floor painted, The results were gratifying. Last year we tried out the Onox foot toughening mats and athletes foot was wiped out. We were not bothered with a single blister and several of our poys, for the first time in years, were free from obnoxious foot odors. I secured your letter from Beverly and submitted it to the Board here; they have decided to work out the same plan. Again I wish to express my thanks for your thoughtful consideration in 1938. I am sorry that I could not reply sooner because of my football duties. Jim and I had a great time at camp and cannot say enough which would cover Jim's fine personality. It was the zone defense which I had in mind when I spoke to Jim, but he apparently thought it was a man to man defense. We, here in our league, play many zone defenses on small courts. They have used many different types against us but the one that bothers us most is where they freeze three men under the basket. We haven't been a long shooting team and as a result they have tried to stop our setups which has forced us somewhat to shoot angle and corner shots, I have both of your books which have been very helpful to me and will review your latest on what you have written on the zone. Allen, | Department of Physical Hducation, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Dr. Allen: At Beverly last year we purchased two of the large 16"x20" mats @ $6.50 each and five gallons of onox @ $3.33 per gallon. We bought , this material in late October and Mr. Mase (now Principal)at Beverly) mentioned last week that he was running low. We have ordered ten gallons of onox and one large mat (16"x20") for the boys and two small (64"x123") one for our girls and one for our Junior High boys. We bought this material from Onox, Inc. 121 Second Street, San Francisco, California. Mr. Alex Hyde, formerly of Wichita, Kansas is one of the officers in the concern.- I have enclosed their quarantee and one of their circulars. It is not my intention to try to pull for this product nor to knock others, but for nearly ten years I looked for something that would help keep our boys and girls feet in good condition. I wes trying to find it when I wrote you two years ago. Onox toughened our boys feet, eliminated blisters, and completely wiped out athlete's foot. Virgil Loy, a senior at Beverly this year, has been bothered with a very obnoxious foot odor for years. He told me last spring that the odor disappeared in less than a week after he started stepping on the mats. oe “JOEL N, MARTIN, SR. HIGH PRINCIPAL C. V. GLAZE, JR. HIGH PRINCIPAL JOHN.C. Onox, Inc., 121 Second St., San Francisco. ft \ ‘ ; i ATHLETE'S FOOT CONTROL THIS DISEASE results from growth of microscopic plants in devitalized skin. These plants are called fungi. The problem is therefore one of controlling vegetable growth. WEARING SHOES causes athlete’s foot, says U. S. Public Health Service bulletin (R-674). Shoes soften and devitalize the skin thus providing the soil neces- sary for the growth of the “omnipresent” fungi. Heat, moisture, and lack of ventilation are ideal conditions for fungus growth. GOING BAREFOOT would keep the skin tough and free from athlete’s foot as Nature intended it should “Yes, Watson, fungi are everywhere. be. Air conditioned skin, like sunbaked soil, is too They are mother nature’s scavengers.” tough for growth of plants. IN THE PAST remedies aimed solely at killing the fungi. But with fungi everywhere—"even in the air” —the futility of this approach is apparent. "NEARLY EVERYONE USING A SHOWER WITH COMMON DRESSING ROOM GETS THE INFECTION ON HIS FEET.” says the bulletin. ' Dr. Loren W. Shatfer of Detroit, writing in the Journal of the Michigan State Medical Society, calls fungus killing “a will-o’-the-wisp endeavor,” then makes this significant statement: “Any effective control must depend upon rendering the skin as soil unsuitable to the growth of fungi.” Isn’t that Nature’s own way? Exposure to the elements toughens the skin, making it unsuitable for plant life. NON-POISONOUS SKIN TOUGHENING WITH ONOX FOLLOWS THAT LEAD — IT HELPS TO COUNTERACT THE SOFTENING EFFECTS OF WEARING SHOES AND TO KEEP THE SKIN NEAR BAREFOOT FIRMNESS, TOO TOUGH FOR FUNGUS GROWTH. All disagreeable features of old methods are gone. Onox is odorless yet eliminates foot odors. It does not stain nor injure fabrics. It keeps its strength indefinitely. Evaporation merely concentrates the solution. ATTRACTIVE SPONGE RUBBER FOOT-MATS DISPLACE THE COLD, SMELLY, DISINFECTANT TUBS.
