Allen, Kansas University Lawrence, Kansas. My dear Dr. Allen:- I want to express my appreciation for the letters you wrote to some of your friends in Salina. I was told by some of the people that your letters and recommendation meant a great deal. I found a strange situation when I came here, and these letters with others aided greatly. Everything is coming along fine, and I feel that I am getting a hold on the church so that by fall I can really introduce a great program. There are so many men here, I think I have five men here for every one I had in Lawrence, and that means I must devise ways and means of keeping them busy and interested. K have met Gene Johnson. He bejongs to my church. Mr. Mackie was out a week ago Sunday. He does not belong, but told me when I visited him that he was going to put the family letter in this church and become active. He has been quite inactive in church work for the past number of years. Dr. Nelson is in the same Clinic with one of my pest men, Dr. Porter Brown, so of course what you wrote to him got around to the place we wanted it to reache I wonder if you saw Robert and his bride when they @ere in Lawrence about & week ago. She is a fine girl and just the type for Robert. She is calm and well poised and will certainly be a balance wheel for him, which he needs at time’ Our church services are bybadcast over station KSAL of Salina every other Sunday. I will be on tomorrow and «then also the 29th, after which we will not broadcast until next> September, as our gervices will be held at 8:30 in the morning. They have been having these early services for some time here just as we did at Lawrence. My mother has rejoiced that she could listen to me every other Sunday. However she is very 43.21 now and we are not sure just what the outcome will be. Mother is past 80. I will be with herea few days next week. Thanks to you for all your courtesies- thanks for your interest in and kindness to our boy- and best wishes to you and yours. Come and see us if you ever come this way The Parsonage here was very poor, but they are buying one of the very nice homes of the city for us, so We will be comfortably situated in a week or two I hope. Up to now we have just camped. Most cordial, Robert A. Hunt 126 North 8th | Salina, Kansas. Hank Jr. finished his High School Basketball play going good. In their State Tournament they won the Sectional. Hank made 14 pionts in the final game and dropped in a nice push shot in the final 4 minute when their team was trailing one point, to win. In the Regional they went to the fanais and lost to south Bend. Hank got along 0.K. hitting for 12 points and holding his man to a big zero and the man he had had been one of the South Bend teams high piont men. Hank was put on the all regional team as guard so the kid is improving. Here is hoping we get to see each other before long. Regards to the family. . your friend, ALLEYS August 15, 1941. I find that I have been very negligent in not acknowledging receipt of the announcement of your wedding to Miss Pauline Alpha Ressell which took place on May 27 at Colony, Kansas. ‘The announcement came just about the time of our examinations and the ending of ovr baseball season, and I have carried thie on my desk hoping to write you and Vrs. Hunt a letter of sincere good wishes. Your dad told me that you were going to Emporia for the summer, but doubtless you have finished with that task and are now getting ready for the opening of the fall tortie I truet that your married life has been very happy and pleasent, and may I wish for you and yours many years of health, happiness and some degree of wealth « at least a competence thet makes it well worth while. With all good wishes, I am Sincerely yours, Direotor of Physical Education and Recreation, FCA: AH Varsity Basketball end Baseball Coach. August 29, 1941. Mr. Gerald Hesse, Lawrence Paper Nill, Lawrence, Kansas. Deay Gerald: T heve talked to Dean Alien Reese, School, night before last and tried to sell him a Country . Club gevibership. He tells mo that he hes played golf end likes it, and I believe somebody close to him could hin @ membership. He is now staying at the Bldridge Hotel - he has a suite of rooms there. the : Toubtless you as chairmen of the membership committee of the Country Club can inguire as to his close associates and write a prescription to suit hime : I also talked to Henry Shenk, a new mam in our Physical Education Tepertment. 1 am going to play golf with him this afternoons. He has the courtesy membership card issued him and proposed by Will Moore, the in men « Prudential, I think. Moore is a meuber, of cours¢e Shenk been at Junction City as coach and athletic director for the past eight or ten years. He made a great record there and doubtless you remember him catching that long forward pass in 1927 and pedaling 40 yards northward to the goel line for one of the touchdowns thet beat Missouri 14 to 7. Gwinn Henry was coeching that year and he had a great team, and we were supposed to take about a 20 or 30 to nothing licking. Barrett Hamilton made the other touchdown, and Flemak made the one for Wissouri in the first few minutes of plays Shenk is in my department now taking the place of Burt DeGroot. He told me that he might join if he could get his work arranged satisfactorily. I told him that since. I would guarantee that. So there will be some salesmanship in his case, but I believe that he will make a valuable member. Pere haps we would have to scrape up a membership for him. : Now for another prospect - Dean George 3B. Smith, of the School of Bduention. I do not kmow whether he plays golf or not but 1 got a letter from Pred Luchring, assistant dean of physical eduo- ation at the University of Pemsylvania. Luchring was athletic dir ector at Nebraska while I was at Kensas, and he later went to Minne~- sota as athletic director there. Luehring wrote when Dean Smith was appointed here, praising Jean Smith very highly as a man inter= ested in activities of all kinds. You kmow that he has been proposed and, I believe, elected to Rotary, so somebody might get him on the i Pp : line for the Coutry Clubs These are the only prospects that I know of at present, but should I learn of others I will pass them on to yous Sincerely yours, . Of course, I realize thet I have had a visit with you since your letter was written, but, nevertheless, I want you to know that we appreciated receiving your good letter. The !issouri game was almost a nightmare, but I wes happy that Vance came through in the clutchese I think Vance Hall is going to be a creat boy, and I agree with you thet if Jim had continued, rather than dropping out with his basketball when he wes a sophomore, he would be further advanced.e Ye hope thet we ere on our way up, but there ere a lot of obstecles in the second semester vovagee I would not be a bit surprised if I saw some of the er at Wichita. Dr. F.C.Allen, Director Dep't. of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Phog :- My sister, Mrs, Catherine Kreamer asked me to write you and thank you for the very courteous way you treated her and the Halls when they met you in Lawrence Monday. And especially was I to thank you for the seats to the Game, From the way my Sister talked about you I am pretty sure that the famous Dr. Allen has made another sincere friend and that has never to date hurt any one.(The Halls were already in that category). I was sorry to note that the boys were sick or weakened by the Flu when they started on that Eastern Trip as that is so weakening no one can function at full effeciency while even slightly under the influence. I have no doubt that was the, difference between the Teams in both games, Also I am sure they could have taken Oklagoma had -it. not been for the after effects. Congratulations on the Iowa State Game as that was the Team from pre-Season and pre- Conference dope I was afraid would be too much for K U, My Sister reports that Vance and Jim looked pretty good Monday night and I am glad for them and for you too, Downs tried to play with two regulars out and three others just recovering from the Flu and lost to a Team they could have beaten 20 points. Smith Center took us 51-40 last night but had to wait until the last two regulars just had to give up before getting the lead in the game, I haven't seen anyone play out this way so far this year in whom you would have any interest. If I do see a player during this Season I will go to work on him through all the channels as I like to see my section of the State represented at & YU, With kindest personal regards to yourself and Mrs, Allen, and with very best wishes for 1941 and the years to come, I an, Sincerely Yours, UN Peeve PS - If the Bank Examiners don't drop in on us in the morning I may have to take the boys to K.C. to see their Dentist & if so will see the game Thurs, in Lawrence and will try to say = oo while there.
