= KANSAS STATE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND APPLIED SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ATHLETICS MANHATTAN, KANSAS Mey 20, 1939 Dr. F. €. Allen Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen; It is rather difficult for me to determine exactly how much we spend on physical education during the year, because quite a good deal of the money used for physical education comes from the College athletic receipts, and the two are not separated in our accounts, that is, as far as supplies go a have to g0 through all of our figures for the year and determine which supplies were used for physical education, intramurals and which for varsity athletics. We get from the regular college budget and from physical education fees about $2400 a year to be used for supplies and equip- ment and upkeep. The rest of our money comes from athletic receipts and is so designated in ovr accounts. Including all students in the college and extluding salar- ies I believe we spend somewhere in the neighborhood from $1 to 91,15 per student on physical education and intramurals. This, me course, is exclusive of money spent for inter-collegiate athletics. During the summer vacation when we have the time we plan to analyze our accounts and separate the physical education and intra- mural expenses from the varsity athletic expenses as closely as we can. I hope that this will be of some value to you and give you the figures that you want, Respectfully yours, SP. hek herve Le P. Washburn, Director, Physical Education for Men LPW/bjn THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA LINCOLN \ OFFICE OF BUS#NESS MANAGER OF ATHLETICS AND STUDENT ACTIVITIES April 10, 1939. Dr. F. C. Allen, Director, Department of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Dr. Allen: Your letter of March 30th to Dr. Clapp has been referred to the writer for further attention. The information which you are seeking in regard to maintenance of tennis courts, hand ball courts, golf and play fields is not available in exactly the form which you aré. seeking, however, we shall be glad to give you such figures as are available. The University maintains 19 tennis courts on the city and agri- culture college campus. These are all rock dust surface courts. The main- tenance budget on these 19 courts is $1,200.00 per year. ‘The courts are used by Physical Education classes, both men and women, and are open to free play for any registered student in the University. I cannot say how many students use the courts during the year but in favorable weather they receive very heavy play. The University does not have a golf course and therefore no in- formation is available on this. In the basement of the Coliseum we have six hand ball courts which were installed by the Intramural Department and the only maintenance on these is a paint job occasionally which work is done by the Intramural Department at a cost I should estimate not to exceed $25.00 per year. These courts are open to play to any registered student in the University and no figures are available as to the number of students making use of then. The Intramural Department has a maintenance budget of $12,00.00 C200.) per year which is used pretty largely in maintaining and operating the Intra- mural program carried out in the Coliseum and the outdoor play fields. The latter figure in regard to maintenance of Intramural fields is not representative of the total cost of this maintenance as many items of ex- pense are carried by the Department of Athletics, such as a ground-Keeper. The new fields which are now being developed adjacent to the Col- iseum are now coming into use for the first time this spring and no accurate maintenance figures are available at this time. Allen Director of Physical Education University of S Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Phog: The information you are asking for concerning our per capita cost for students is not available at this time. This year is the second of the biennium and being so, the intramural in Physical Education is tied up in such a manner that these figures are not available. When the Legislature gets through with our appropriations for next year, I can give you the fac When you have completed your findings, I would certainly appreciate any information you can let me have. The Big Six didn't really look as good as I had hoped in the Collegiate Tournament, but on the other hand, they didn't look too bad either. ‘What is the game coming to, 9 a do we just have to have a champion ev With best regards, I am Sincerely yours, BEL Fi bles 0A ae ae te Ve McDermott Director TET Tl oo HVileas 1942--THE SEMICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA—1942 THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ATHLETICS LINCOLN DIVISION OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION FOR MEN . April 7, 1969 Dr. Forrest C. Alien, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. - My dear Dr. Allen: Your favor of March 50th has been duly received. The maintenance of facilities for the particular activities you mentioned comes largely from funds which are handled by Mr. John Selleck or from Athletic Funds, all of which pass through his hands and, therefore, I am turning your communication over to him with a request that he reply to the seme. We have a general maintenance fund of $1200 for work on the city campus for Physical Education for Men and a similar fund of $600 for work on the © Agricultual College Campus, but only a comparatively small part of these funds are used for the maintenance of the activities men- tioned above and none in connection with the majority of these activities. I doubt if the apita cost of maintenance of facilities for each of the activities you have mentioned is avail- able because of the fact that so much of the use of these activities is free, unsupervised participation but Mr. Selleck can certainly give you much more information than I can.
