THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA LINCOLN \ OFFICE OF BUS#NESS MANAGER OF ATHLETICS AND STUDENT ACTIVITIES April 10, 1939. Dr. F. C. Allen, Director, Department of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Dr. Allen: Your letter of March 30th to Dr. Clapp has been referred to the writer for further attention. The information which you are seeking in regard to maintenance of tennis courts, hand ball courts, golf and play fields is not available in exactly the form which you aré. seeking, however, we shall be glad to give you such figures as are available. The University maintains 19 tennis courts on the city and agri- culture college campus. These are all rock dust surface courts. The main- tenance budget on these 19 courts is $1,200.00 per year. ‘The courts are used by Physical Education classes, both men and women, and are open to free play for any registered student in the University. I cannot say how many students use the courts during the year but in favorable weather they receive very heavy play. The University does not have a golf course and therefore no in- formation is available on this. In the basement of the Coliseum we have six hand ball courts which were installed by the Intramural Department and the only maintenance on these is a paint job occasionally which work is done by the Intramural Department at a cost I should estimate not to exceed $25.00 per year. These courts are open to play to any registered student in the University and no figures are available as to the number of students making use of then. The Intramural Department has a maintenance budget of $12,00.00 C200.) per year which is used pretty largely in maintaining and operating the Intra- mural program carried out in the Coliseum and the outdoor play fields. The latter figure in regard to maintenance of Intramural fields is not representative of the total cost of this maintenance as many items of ex- pense are carried by the Department of Athletics, such as a ground-Keeper. The new fields which are now being developed adjacent to the Col- iseum are now coming into use for the first time this spring and no accurate maintenance figures are available at this time. Very, july yours, J gn eck; iness Manager. JKS:cp
