LARAMIE ,WYOMING oe February 9, 1940 Mr. Forrest C. Allen, | a Athletic Department, —— University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Phog: I have noticed by the papers that the football coach and track coach at Baker University has resigned his position. I wonder if you might know any thing about the situation at that school, and whether it would be worth my while to apply for that position. I know that it is a Methodist school, but that is about all I know about it. I am now located at the University of Wyoming, am an assistant in football, have been track coach and teach Physical Education. Dutch Witte brought me to Laramie from Colorado School of Mines where I spent a year after playing three years of professional football with the Boston Redskins. Dutch is now peddling cokes for the Caca Cola Company in Fremont, Nebraska. Do you have any idea how much the salary would be at Baker University, and the pressure put on the coach. I have a nice position here, but I feel that if I am to stay in the coaching game, that I will have to have a team of my own, or get an assistant coaching position with some larger school. There really isn't enough to do for the men that are now employed by the Athletic Department. It has been sometime since I have seen you, but I certainly enjoyed playing against your teams, but not taking those lickings. Of course, if you ever happen to need a good assistant at the University of Kansas, I am always available. I had always felt when I was at Nebraska, that I would like to coach at the University of Kansas some day. That may come true some day, you never can tell. I would certainly appreciate any information that you can give to me regarding Baker. Thanking you for everything, including the fact you were so nice to me when I was in University, I am Sincerely yours, Steve Hokuf
