GAVIN HADDEN CIVIL ENGINEER 607 FIFTH AVE., NEW YORK DESIGN — SUPERVISION — CONSULTATION RECREATION FACILITIES: FIELDS, COURTS, POOLS, TRACKS, RINKS, STANDS, PLAYGROUNDS, GYMNASIA FIELD HOUSES, STADIA, INDOOR TENNIS COURTS AIRPORTS December 18, 1939 ee vin Dear oe. C20 bons: You may recall the booklet issued about two and a half years ago, illustrating some of the work of this office on the design of facilities for recreation and athletics during the 15 year period 1922-1937. Since then I have continued to serve on similar projects for institutions, municipalities, clubs and individuals, including: Colgate, Harvard, Cornell and Brown Universities; the Loomis School, Groton School, Episcopal High School; the Town of Ridgefield, Conn.; the City of Lynchburg, Va. About 60% of these commissions might be termed, in the language of trade, "repeat orders". In view of the present uncertainty of world economic conditions I find some people are postponing the construction of projects of this kind. This of course tends to produce a shortage of work in my office and makes it more difficult for me to keep my organization ready and avail- able. Until the present trying times have passed, therefore, I am offering to render preliminary services, on needed projects for which construction funds may not be now available, at less than usual fees. This temporary expedient works out, I feel, to the advantage of all concerned: to my clients in enabling them to make preparation for recreation projects efficiently and more economically, to me in enabling me to keep my organization going. These projects differ radically in many features from ordinary types of engineering or architectural design and this makes experienced services such as those of this office particularly useful in helping to plan for the best and moSt economical results. Because of the limitations rightly imposed upon professionally practicing engineers, I must rely principally upon my clients and friends to tell others of my work and to advise me of projects on which my services would be useful. If you know of any project involving the construction of new, or the alteration and improvement of old, recreation facilities, even one which must await better economic conditions before building, will you not please let me know and permit me the opportunity to discuss the possibilities with those in charge? Faithfully yours, a . \ re oo. i : ae j™N I“ GH :AK
