Allen, Director Department of Physical 4ducation, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear "Phog" s— I would very much appreciate it if you could send me a few Football Schedules for 1959 if you have them in the form of small stickers or cards such as those used last year. I usually receive some from fred Ellsworth but this year the Alumi Association neglected to send me any. I will be in Topeka for a few days the latter part of next week and hope that K U will be playing in Lawrence on the Saturday of the 2lst. so I could drive over there for the game. I haven't heard from Vance Hall directly but once since he left Downs but understand from his mother that he thinks they work them lots harder in College than in High School. I will write him soon on the general subject of keeping up his studies from day to day and not waiting until examination time to cram and try to pour it all in for just the time being. Hope that he makes good in his studies for I am sure that he will do all right other-— wise as he is a fine boy and has lots of natural talent for athletics. With kindest regards to yourself and Mrs. Allen, and with best wishes for K U this year, I am, Sincerely Yours, URNA error? ) Vice—Pres. HARRISON BROTHERS, AGENTS DOWNS, KANSAS apn. 17, 1940. Dr. Forrest C, Alien, Director Dep't. of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear "Phog" i- I was very interested in your letter of progress in connection with Vance Hall and his work in Freshman Basketball. When a fellow sort of shoots the works and goes to bat for a chap as strongly as I did for Vance Hall it is a pleasure to see that person deliver as predicted. I have always been fond of boys and children and wish I had more than my three but can't afford it under the present unsettled conditions.Ever since 1921 I have been hauling football and basketball and track teams around the country and keep pretty close to the High School kids and get to know them fairly well. Vance was my choice out of this School for a long period of years. I showed your letter to his parents and they were very interested and proud that you could write such a letter about their son. They also said they would like to keep the letter but Vance would never know they had it. Max Kissell of Portis High School is going great this year and getting a lot of publicity. He is a fine boy and is already sold on KU. He is playing on a fairly good Team but they haven't played any good teams so far in their Schedule. Last year he and Vance were featured in a battle of stars and played each other as Centers in the only game Downs and Portis played. Vance scored about 26 points and Max six or seven as I remember it. After the game Max told me Vance was just too much for any one man to even try to hold down. This year Max is taller and some heavier and in another two years from now should be giving some of your Juniors and Seniors a tussle to keep him on the bench. I keep talking KU to Max and to his folks and the whole family are sold on the School. (They are without any talking but it doesn't hurt to keep the pep up). I haépe that by the time you receive this you are back in Lawrence with Missouri safely hurdled and that your boys go ahead and win the Conference Title. If Miller and Engleman were in shape I am sure it would be a certainty. Hope you get them on both feet before the Season ia Over, With kindest regards to yourself and Mrs. Allen and may 1940 be the best year you ever had. | Sincerely, D OFFICE OF STATE ENTOMOLOGIST Southern Division of Kansas H. Allen Athletic Director University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear "Phog* Time marches on! “O. B." Hartley, is at this moment in the office, rehashin' days long ago at Mt. Oread. Here, I am working for a living, and working hard, and "0. B." is Chairman of the Green Committee of the Olympia Country & Golf Club at Olympia, building a magnificent domicile where, from his big bay window, ships plying in the Puget Sound and flocks of ducks flying toward Mt. Rainier, do not tire his appreciative eye. "QO. Be” mentioned something a moment ago thet I well re- call. He took a snap-shot of a field goal I kicked in Colorado vs Kansas. It revealed my right leg at a higher altitude than it has ever reached sincee The ball is plainly visible as it flirted toward the cross-bar. "0. Be” tells me that shortly after that, the late Dr. Naismith asked him for the film and it was given to Doc. If it would not be too much of a bother, I wish that you would ask his personal representative if he would look through the Dr's effects and let me have the film, if it can be located, I want to have an enlargement made of it and then will return it if so desired. | Been a long time since I journied back East, though my sister and brother-in-law in Kansas City drive out occasionally in the summer. PIERCE COURT DEPUTY MUNICIPAL COURT B, MCCLERNAN | OFFICE DEPUTY 16th January, 1940. | Dear "Phog" I drove down to Portland, this morning, which is only about 135 miles’ from Olympia, the grandest spot in this whole country. It has been 32 years since I last saw Dutz Cohn, whom I am sure you will well remember, and you can understand what joy I got in renewing that splendid acquaintenceship that developed at good old Ke U. This snap-shot I took of Dutz kicking a 35 or 40 yard field goal in the Colorado game, I think was in the fell of 1906, and it was such a clear picture that when I showed it to Dr. Naismith, he asked me for the film, as Dutz has told you in his letter. I hope it can be found so Dutz may have the use of it and keep it if not further desired by Dr. Naismith's personal repre- sentative. Our youngest daughter is in Washington State College at Pullman, Washington and likes it real well. Won't take time to write more now, but simply want to say Doc, that if you drive our West, near the capitol of Washington be sure to bring along your golf clubs and let me know you are coming. With kindest regards and best wishes, I am as ever Sincerely, OBH fa P. S. We built a home right on Puget Sound and right next to the Country Club at the 9th green which is right across the road from my garage, and I have seen wild deer right within 20 feet of my Page Two garage, the place is surrounded by majestic Washington firs and is picturesque to the 'nth degree.
