HARRISON BROTHERS, AGENTS DOWNS, KANSAS apn. 17, 1940. Dr. Forrest C, Alien, Director Dep't. of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear "Phog" i- I was very interested in your letter of progress in connection with Vance Hall and his work in Freshman Basketball. When a fellow sort of shoots the works and goes to bat for a chap as strongly as I did for Vance Hall it is a pleasure to see that person deliver as predicted. I have always been fond of boys and children and wish I had more than my three but can't afford it under the present unsettled conditions.Ever since 1921 I have been hauling football and basketball and track teams around the country and keep pretty close to the High School kids and get to know them fairly well. Vance was my choice out of this School for a long period of years. I showed your letter to his parents and they were very interested and proud that you could write such a letter about their son. They also said they would like to keep the letter but Vance would never know they had it. Max Kissell of Portis High School is going great this year and getting a lot of publicity. He is a fine boy and is already sold on KU. He is playing on a fairly good Team but they haven't played any good teams so far in their Schedule. Last year he and Vance were featured in a battle of stars and played each other as Centers in the only game Downs and Portis played. Vance scored about 26 points and Max six or seven as I remember it. After the game Max told me Vance was just too much for any one man to even try to hold down. This year Max is taller and some heavier and in another two years from now should be giving some of your Juniors and Seniors a tussle to keep him on the bench. I keep talking KU to Max and to his folks and the whole family are sold on the School. (They are without any talking but it doesn't hurt to keep the pep up). I haƩpe that by the time you receive this you are back in Lawrence with Missouri safely hurdled and that your boys go ahead and win the Conference Title. If Miller and Engleman were in shape I am sure it would be a certainty. Hope you get them on both feet before the Season ia Over, With kindest regards to yourself and Mrs. Allen and may 1940 be the best year you ever had. | Sincerely,
