Dear Sir:

Have just received a letter from Chuck telling me about your
offer to enter Kansas University. Sounds interesting to the extent
that I will be practically putting myself through on your plan at
Ry Us-

Chuck suggestted that I write to you giving as many facts
about myself as I can. Here they are, <

Am six feet tall, weigh one hundred and seventy pounds, and
am twenty two years of age. Graduated from Schenley High School of
Pittsburgh in 1935. Entered University of Pittsburgh Sept. of that
year and dropped out after having gone to classes for three months
and because I remained in school for three fourths of the term, I
received AT the end of the term a transcript with grades on it, all
flunks or incompletes. Well I argued and argued but to no avail to
have them change their minds, Maintained a" B "—— Ave. in high
school,

Worked from the time I left Pitt until I entered George
Washington University in Sept. 1937. What a beautifully painted
picture I received ef the school only to go there and find out
what a place it really was. But decided to stick it out for my
Freshman year, which I did. Played on and undefeated Fresiman
basketball team, winning sixteen and losing none. And that after
we had lost three regulars and two subs, filling in with Freshman |
football men. It was about the only real thing I enjoyed my whole
year down there, Decided to drop out this year and try to get lined
up for this coming year.as it is my main idea to finish school and
get my degree, Because I can see that without a College education
it is hard to get anywhere in this old world. My grades at G. W.
were one "F" in Psychology--second semester, "D"--first semester.
"D'--first semester in English, "C"--sencond semester. B, B, B, B,
and C, C,in Phystcal Education for the two semesters,

Have been to K, U. and know what it is-like, and as I have
heard so much about Yourself, Mr. Allen,I feel that I wouln!t be
doing anything that I didn't know about’ if I happend to enter K, U.

- Would feel it quite an honor to be able to participate under
your guidance, and to attend K. U. Therefore I hope that things may
 

be worked out satisfactorily for both parties,

Chuck said to explain to you just what I would need to
go to school, so here it is. As I can't expect any help from out-
side, and don't want to have any, I will practicully need everything.
Meaning just this, As the student loan would take care of my tuitiond
and books after the first semester I would need a job to take care
of my rom and board and spending money. Of course until I had
proven my worth as a scholar to secure a student loan I would need
a job to take care of everything. Like the student loan idea very
much because, it gives a fellow a chance to pay his own way through
school, -

Have tried to place everything before you as I see it and to
be frank and to the point.

Have a temporary job probably lasting until the 15th of July
and then I will be on my own again, Will be free until school starts
again as I am definitely going back again,and would like very much,
if it can be arranged, to enter K. U. As I am told you all have and
A-1 Physical Education school, !

Wannt to Major in Pysical Ed. and minor in Economics,
Mr. Allen I would appreciate it very much if you would let
me know what I can expect in regards to my chances of entering K. U.

as soon as it is convenient, as I would like to know what to plan
for in the way of attending school this fall,

Dear “Phog." :—

I rode to the County Tournament in Osborne Friday
night with Vance Hall and he came in Saturday to talk about K U with
me. Vance informs me that he will have to have some help while in
School at least part of the time as his father can't afford to bear the
whole brunt of the expenses. I just thought I would mention this to
you before calling on you this coming week-end so you could bring up
the question to him as he is for all of the glory being bestowed on hin,
quite a bashful and retiring sor of a chap. If you can assure him that
efforts will be made in his behalf to secure part time work it will help
him a lot.

Downs defeated Osborne (Class A) 25-19 in the first
game of the Tournament, Hall made 19 points. Saturday night Dowms beat
Alton 40-24 and Hall scored 25 points for Downs. This gives him about
an even average of 22 points per game for the season, and he played the
first few with his wrist and hand bandaged from an Armistice Day Football
break. Vance has scored more points than the opposing team four games this
season and has tied the opponents totals in four other games. In every
game he has had the whole opposing team trying to stop him and has been
subjected to some mighty close and rough guarding. He just seems to run
the other boys down and then pour it on them. I believe in the last five
games which have been against strong teams he has secured the rebound from
both backstops at least 50% of the time in the whole of each game. He is
also in almost half of the jumps for held balls. In other words he goes out
and gets the ball from the opoonents and then either shoots over them or
dribbles through or around them and scores. He makes his own op ortunities
and it isn't a case of the other boys feeding him all the time. He feeds
the others a lot and is a team player and not a glory hound. It just so
happens this year Downs has a squad with about 7 guards and one forward.

We will see you Saturday the 25th. and in the meantime
lots of good luck to you and your boys.

I don't wish to bother you as have some faint idea
as to how busy you must be at this time.

Our Local High School Superintendent has arranged to
set up a game from Friday Night to Thursday night next week so it will
be possible for me to bring Vance Hall and Allen Verhage to Lawrence
for the K U — Oklahoma game next Saturday, the 25th. My wife has to
take our oldest boy to Kansas City for dental work end has an appointment
for 9 A.M. Saturday so it is necessary that we leave here Friday P.M.

I am anxious for you to meet Vance Hall and wonder if
you will be in your Office or at home at any time Saturday morning. We
will need three tickets as "Bing" Smith has tickets for my wife and son
who will attend the game with the Smiths.

Just one more short paragraph to let you know that Hall
is still going strong. Has averaged 22 points per game in 14 games this
“eason. Against a big, fast Beloit Team that averaged 6t13e last Friday
night he scored 22 points in a game won by Downs 32-26.

Since we did not make the journey

to Downs last evening, we missed

| what was undoubtedly a most inter-
| esting battle. From Jim Beardmore,
we learn the individual shooting fig-
ures as follows: Quick shot 10 field
goals to make two while counting one |
free throw in one chance; White at-
| tempted 5 field goals to score one
and had noc harity chances; Conn
| shot ten field goals and counted three
as well as 5 of his 6 free shots; Olson
made one counter out of 6 field shots
| and failed on both free shots; Wray
| didn’t shoot from the court but tal-
lied 5 of his 6 charity chances, and

Maynard missed both field attempts

| but made one of his * gift shots.

| For further notes on the game of
| last night, we have the following
| written by Ranold Plott who wit-
messed the game:
| The second team. game last night
'at Downs generated intense excite-
ment to make a fitting atmosphere
for the fine first team game that fol-
lowed. Early in the game the Downs
reserves showed considerable mas-
tery .over the Trojan seconds, but
in the third quarter the Trojans
warmed up and burned the hoop net
with a fusillade of successful shots to
bring the score to an even balance.
From that point until the end of the
game the lead shifted back and
forth with rapid succession, and al-
though Beloit was two points be-
hind just before the gun Frank sunk
a shot that tied the game. In the over-
time period, Downs monopolized the
ball giving them the chance to score
before hardly a half minute was up.
If the Trojan first string had kept
up its fast-breaking pace it started
last night, another story might have
been told. The Trojans started’ off
against the Dragons with hot-shots
and quick-break playing unprece-
dented for the Trojans in first-quar-
ter work. A comfortable lead was
claimed by the locals at the end of
the first quarter but the second quar-
ter the Dragons revealed their real
stuff and held the Trojans scoreless
while they themselves piled up a nice
pointage during that quarter. The
second half found both teams bat-
tling their hearts out, with Downs
Maintaining -a-. slight advantage
throughout.

 

 
With only three minutes left to
play the score stood 26-24 in Downs’
favor and at that point in the game
Vance Hall, the Dragon hoop whiz,
went to. the bench on fouls. Of the
26 points for the Dragons, Hall had
made 22, and with him out of the
game both Downs and Trojan side-
lines figured the game was in the
bag for Beloit. But not so. It was ap-

| parent in the last few minutes of
|play that the Dragons could score
| in a pinch without Hall, and after a
| substitute was sent into the game
' the Downs boys went to town and
; scored six points to Beloit four, the
| game ending 32-26.

In spite of Beloit’s excellent guard-
‘ing, Hall maintained. his reported
_ average of 22 points a game this sea-
son by piling up just that many last

night. Hall is a center-shot artist and
as a result is difficult to handle with-
out drawing out his opponent guards
, too far from the basket for the op-
-ponent’s good .As a_ result he can
| shoot almost at will with uncanny

| That Downs is headed for high
honors in the state in Class B can
hardly be argued, Hall’s maintenance
| of his present record being the only
| Qualification for such a statement.
| Downs undoubtedly has a one-man
| Scoring machine which is sufficient
to win most of the games, but wheth-
|er the Dragons can withstand any
long period of play without Hall
might be questioned,

| Very little of criticism can be said
| of Beloit’s playing last night. The en-
| tire battle was one of heads-up bas-
| ketball, with the exception perhaps|
| of the second quarter previously de-
scribed. One criticism, however,
might be offered in that under the
strain of excitement and confusion
in last minute play when the score is

 

 
close the Trojans have a tendency
| to lose their equilibrium and give
| way to wild ball-throwing instead of
cool deliberate playing. This was dis-
played noticeably. last evening in the
last minute of the game.

Quite opposite to the scoring rec-
ord of the Dragons which showed
Hall, of course, with the bulk of the
load, the Trojans shared quite even-
ly with the scoring throughout the

} game. In our opinion, under average
playing conditions this situation is
‘far safer and will constitute more
‘consistent scoring than if one man
| does all the work. It is merely a mat-|

Just a note to thank you for the very good
seats you secured for us for the K U - Oklahoma game Saturday
night. We all enjoyed our visit while in Lawrence and the boys
thought everyone they met about the friendliest people they ever
came in contact with.

_ Their general’ treatment and the basketball game
just naturally settled things as far as where they will attend School
next Fall. They both said they had the most pleasant week-end they
had ever spent. Your talk to the boys wherein you stressed the fact
that K U was not a snap in any respect helped sell them a lot. Hall
said he believed you mold the truth in everything you said whereas so
many Coaches and students try to convince him that their Schools are
"nie" for a chap like him. Hall likes the plain facts and hates to be
made over and the treatment of everyone down there was just oneperfect
week-end to him.

I am enclosing a Portis Paper ( or rather mailing one
under separate cover) to show what J.E.Kissell, Editor and one of the
oldest and keenest basketball fans in this whole territory thinks of
Hall as a player. If you wish I will send you the dope on his play in
the District and Regional Tournaments.
