Dear Commander, or Admiral, or what shall we call you, Old Fellow? = When I was down at Norman, when we got our licking in an over- time game, I’went down and came back with Dave and Mrs. MeKown. They gave me your address, and ever since I have been expecting to write you and send you the Jayhawk Rebounds. I am putting you on our mail- ing list so thet you will get the ones as they come out. Iam only sorry that I hadn't your address sooner and I could have sent you ae lot of the earlier issues. Dear Golonel Karl: In the February 9th Rotary bulletin I received word of your hospitalization in Australia. I intended immediately to write you, but like all procrastinators I did not do it when I intended to. However, I am now expressing to you our sincerest wishes for your early recovery. - You are a man of such indefatigable energy that you never take time to allow Nature to repair some of the ravages of your busy life. I know the rest at the hospital will be good for you. At least it will make you slow down a bit. So well do I remerber your busy days here on the campus, and from all reports that we get you are even busier now than when yo were here. | : You certainly have done much’in spreading the good will of Rotary to other lands. May your good work continue, and may your health improve. My kindest regards and sincerest wishes. Rotarily yours, Director of Physical Rducation, Varsity Basketball Coach. Tulsa, Okla. 3-59-45 Dear Dr. Allen, I, received your letter and wish to thank you for the picture enclosed. You certainly had the Iowa game sized up correctly, I am very sorry the boys were not in better condition but there are some things we can't control. Grady Skillern and his boys at Central High want through an undefeated season with 18 wins, then lost to Claremore in an overtime game in the regional tournament. I beleive he had the best team in the state but just had one of those nights in a single elimination tournament. The Jayhawker year book was what I wanted, I beleive there are either four or five volumes for the year. I will list Jim's address ‘below. Again I thank you for what you have done. Truly yours. ae itv ty Js Be. Briley 2012 East 13th Place * Tulsa, Okla. Pyt. James E. Briley A. S. N. 18164080 3704 A. A. F. Bu Squadron V, Class 197 Keesler Field, Miss. 2 March 1, 1945. Mr. J. EB. Briley, ee 2012 East 13th Place, fulsa, Oklahoma. — | I was delighted to hear from you, but I am afraid that you are more optimistic than I am regarding the Big Six championship. ; Iowa. State is the toughest team that I lmow of to lick up there and we have three badly crippled boys. Kirk Scott sprained an ankle severely here in scrimmage Monday, and Gordon Reynolds has a bruised hip that is slow to heal, and Charlie Moffett has a couple of charley- horses. And they all came about in Monday's serimmage against the second team. on ee ere ? - It scemed as if the second stringers were imbued with the theory of annihilation, but if they had taken it ous on some other team, I would have been happy. It might have been due to the tension while they were waiting for the Kansas State-Iowa State game Monday night, but whatever it was, they tore into each other like a pack of bulldogs. And naturally the varsity is not playing against second stringers as strenuously as the second stringers played against the vareity, so the three key men came cut second best. oe 2 Herbert Heim has had synovitis, which we call “water on the knee", for the past two weeks and as he is not a rugged fellow this © works against the rough going that we anticipate at Iowa State. Fire- book is a big, rugged forward, and Mott and Block are tougher than 4 boot. ‘They are big, aggressive farmer boys and they make the going tough up thers. wie might do the impossible, but I am not too eptimistic. _ - However, I think the boys have done wonderfully well considering what they started with and how they have hung on. ss, : I am glad to hear from Jim. Won't you give ma his Army address? I am not sure what you have given me will reach him, and I will send him the Jayhawk Rebounds and keep in touch with him. then you ask for the oopy of the 1944-45 Jayhawker do you mean the yearbook — which just comes out two or three times a year, their regular annual, or the Kansan, which is the paper, or do you mean the Jayhawk Rebounds _ 5 brochure that I mimeograph for the boys overseas? | | I am sending you the only print of a picture that we have of Jimay. Pictures are very difficult to obtain as the film is next . to impossible to be had. Most photographers have gone out of business, a but we managed to get one shot of each one of the boys. Allen; Dear Dr. Allen, I have followed the progress of your basket ball team with great interest and it looks like you have the Big Six championship in the bag. I am sure that Jim would have liked to have finished the season with you, however. he is getting to play quite often down at Keesler Field, Miss. He qualified as a radio gunner in the Air Corp but has asked for a transfer to the Paratroops. I wovld like to ask a fa¥or of you, if it is not too mech trouble I would like to have all the copies of the 1944-45 Jayhawker, also any pictures you might have taken of Jim for the basketball team.
