We play this team at the Chicago Col- iseum on January 4. I have written Frank Root of Kansas State who lost to them recently. I thought perhaps you might know something about this team and style of play «tc. I thought that you might be willing to take time from your many duties to drop me a line. You perhavs do mt remember me as well as I remember you at the National Basketball Coaches Convention, but I have followed your record closely for several years and have always thought that we might be able to some day arrange a game with your team up here in Minnesota. Dear "Phog." :— I am a bit slow in answering your very nice letter of January 20th. but expected to get in touch with you when I went through Lawrence last Thursday evening. I stayed all night with "Bing" Smith and thought I would drop across the Street end talk to you but Pete Reedy and his wife called and I couldn't get away as it was late when they left. Vance Hall was mighty pleased with your letter and it was the kind of a letter that just about cinched the matter of where ; ae he is going to School next year. I will be very pleased to accept your - invitation to bring Vance to the Oklahoma-Kansas_ game Feb. 25s] Maymm— g . bring another Senior basketball player with me named Allen Verhage who " is also coming to K.U. next Fall. I just today found that he is planning on K.U., so if you can spare us about three tickets it will be just fine. Hall is weakening and may prove disappointing to a University Coach if he keeps going the way he is at present. Against Osborne High School last Friday night in a game won by Downs 22-19, Hall only made 16 of the 22 points. Osborne was undefeated for the Season and plays mostly Class A Schools. Tuesday against Cawker City Hall made 22 points and last night against a good big Lebanon Team he dropped down to 29 points in a game won by Downs 49-31. This chap is absolutely unspoiled and the Coach says he is the finest fellow to work with a Coach could ask for.I sat with Jim Arnold last night at the game and Jim stated "that Hall just naturally has everything a good forward needs". As a Sophomore he went out for Football at 127#, as a Junior he “ weighed 148, and this Fall reported at 162, so you can see he is still growing, and has gone from a little, fast boy to a big, fast six-footer in a little over two years. With kindest regards and best wishes, I an, Sincerely Yours, - ALN ay ine P.S.— Sorry to note in the papers and in talking with Arnold that you have hadthe misfortune to have to take action with some of your Squad. Dr. Forrest C. Allen, Director Physical kducaion Department, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear "Phog" %— I showed your nice letter to Vance Hall Saturday and he is of the impression that he will go to Lawrence with his Coach and two other boys to enter the High School events in the “elays on Friday. Vance will pole vault for Downs High. If they don't go that way 1 have asked him to drive my car down as Helen has to take Billy, Jr. to Kansas City to be there the morning of the 2lst.(Fri.)} and she will have only the two boys, another lady, and Vance if he can arrange to go along. Helen has been seriously sick with a Strep infection in her am and I asked Vance to drive for her. At any rate he will no doubt be there for he is thoroughly sold on K U for the next four years and I don't believe there is a single chance of any smarty Coach from some small School talking him out of K U. I can't remember whether or not I ever wrote and thanked you for the nice way we were treated in February. I usually attend to such things while they are real fresh in my mind, so ifl failed previously I do want to again assure you that all of us had a wonderful time and enjoyed every minute of our trip. I didn't mention Allen Verhage in the above because I don't believe he will ever come out for Varsity Basketball when he comes to K U as he is just a very ordinary High School player and won't be big enugh or fast enough to ever stand a chance down there. He is a fine chap but no basketball player. I don't think he will be there Saturday withVance. I see that our mutual friend "Bing" Smith has another job which will take him away from Lawrence more often. Glad for him but think he is a fine chap for any Tom. I don't know when I ever met a chap who so completely commanded my instant liking. With kindest regards, and hoping to see you soon, Sincerely, AUDI erty) it iit. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas, — Dear Sir: Your yery good letter of facts and knowledge, received and appreciated, As to reactions you ask for all I can say is, " Amen", Seems like you know all the answers, Who am I to speak against the truth? You are perfectly corrcet, with the exception that it takes more than academic work to make school a success, Surroundings, frééndship s cooperation and etc. have to be there also, and if one goes wrong it can upset everything, As to your statement about the fellows you mention having had to work, here is all I know about what I did at G. W. ana if there is any harder work at Your Schgol then I dontt want my schooling, Worked from ten in the night till in the morning, waxing floors in the cla&s rooms carring around a two hundred and fifty pound waxing machine up and down steps. That was for five months when basketball season wasn't on, So nobody can say anthing tome about working and trying to do studying at the same time, But as far as some other things you said you are perfectly right. AS you say I would need to take care of myself the first semester,1l guess K, U. and Mansfield will not get together. Would like to go to K, U. but can't afford that. Will go to school though as there is a school that I sure I can go to and work my way through. and I don't want (have to ask favors from anyone, I promised myself and my folks that I would finish school if there was any possible way of doing it and mean to do yast that. Se thanking you for your time and kind letter and not blaming you for . not taking the chance on me at all,Iguess 1 will bow out, After all basketball is secondary to my finishing my schooling and getting my Coaching certificate and I can go to Some little school here in the state, of course I may not get quite the high class teaching that I would elsewhere, but that has to be expected, Would like to get your very intellecual letters again, and may be out your way again shortly and if I do,would sure apperciate it if we could spend a few hours together just talking, I also realize this typing is not up to standard, excuse please, Best regards to you sir. al A With noe waaay I em Very sincerely yours, Mrector of Physton] Mucation and Recreation, University Lawrence, Kansas pear “Deg ae i Please pardon the delay in answering your letter of July 1. I read your letter to Mansfield with a great deal of interest and was certainly glad that you explained matters to him as you did. I, as a brother, could not, of course, bring home the facts to him as forcefully and as ably as you have, and I certainly want to thank you for your time and efforts in his behalf. I wrote Mansfield after receiving your letter and told him that since he had already had one chance for the easy way, perhaps it was time to try it the hard way, therefore it would be strictly up to him what he wants to do. Again thanking you for your kindness and please give my regards to Mrs, Allen and Mike. Kindest personal regards to you. Chuck Hyatt
