Allen Department of Physical Education University of Kansas My dear Dr. Allen; I have already told Mr. Bayles that I will do what I can to see that the high school gymnasiums are hereafter open to their students during the Christmas vacation. I see no reason why they should not be open in the afternoons, at least, for the young people of the local schools. Sincerely yours, Cet i Paul B. Lawson, Dean January 21, 1959 Rie Ce G. Bayles Superintendent of Bldg. & Grounds University of Kansas Dear lr, Bayles: Mire Longs ) Supervises a group of Boy’ Scouts, has as use of the ent Gymasiun for a cou le of hours Saturday morning. He . brought | group of boys up e couple of weeks ago and supervised their activites, We are per= mitting him to use it again this week. The reason I am writing you is to show you ’ the need for a place for these boys, not only of High School age but also of Grade School age to have a place during the day time for supervised play. This further subdstentiates our argument that the High School gymesiun should be kept open Saturday and evenings. | Our gymnasium has been infested with . boys this winter. I do not mean to liken youngsters to rodents but they dart in and out on * all three fioors of the disturbing the play, and practice of our university students. Dear Phog: Reference is made to yours of the 6th which I have delayed answering until I could look around a little for information as to what has been going on. Your state- ment was a complete surprise to me, but after investigating I find that this situation has existed for years and am even told that if the doors are not open the boys break in. There apparently is no reason in the world they should expect the use of facilities on the Hill and I am not sure the trouble arises entirely from High School students. However, I am sure the Board will take this matter up at our regular meeting in February and at least attempt to assist in some way in remedying this situation. I enjoyed the game last night very much and after talking the matter over with the down-town boys I am pleased to advise that we have agreed not to change coaches,at least before the end of the season. The boys showed a lot of the old time Kansas fight and also a lot of good basket ball and I am sure that every game they play this season they will at least have their adversaries very much worried. I am sure you will hear something about the other matter after our February meeting.
