much to have you feel that I was criticizing you personally or have
you feel that during some moment of anger on my part I said uncom

When President Franklin De Roosevelt announced the National Defense
Program, college men and organizations all over the country voiced their desire
to help in the preparedness of the Nation by a larger physical education programe
After the football season the BigeSix faculty representatives and athletic directors
emphasized their willingness to cooperate in this venture. During the christmas
meeting in New York the National Collegiate Athletic Association reemphasized ite

The action of the faculty representatives and athletic directors of the
Big-Six Conference in cutting the basketball squads to ten men for travel and home
games seems not only discriminatory but paradoxical. In football 33 men is the
limit; in basketball 10 mene Three times as many men that comprise a football
team are taken on a trip while but two times as many basketball men are permitted
to go on tripse

In the Mayo Clinic's research at Rochester, it has been discovered that
the peak of fatality after operations occurred during the months of January and —
February, owing to the fact that the sun's rays are the shortest at that time and
the vitality of the individual the lowest. Flu and the common cold have taken a
great toll and have weakened the individual beyond resistances

Flu runs rampant all through the basketball season, weakening the players'
heart action and subjecting than to strain in addition to the vigorous game of basket]
balls; therefore, it is necessary that the coach substitute frequently to conserve
the health and strength of the boys. With this limit on the number of players there
are not enough men on the squad to do the job satisfactorily. Not only is it dis»
criminatory but it is paradoxical when our athletic leaders say to the Nation that —
they desire to increase the number of participants, when by counteraction they
decrease the number of participants,

The BigeSix faculty representatives and athletic directors further went
on record by saying that in case of a tied championship, the like of which happened
last year when Oklahom, Missouri and Kansas ended in a triple tie, the best offensive
and defensive record of the team will be taken into accoumt and no actual play-off
will be necessarye ,

By this rule they will foree the doach to play already fatigued players for
the sake of percentage, when the game is already actually won or loste Under the
old plan, a fresh substitute on the bench could get his reward for his many hours of
patient practice by getting into the games But. under the present plan of comparing
the best offensive and defensive record of the teams, then there is nothing for the
coach to do but to continue in the game the players who ean make the best records
This of coarse applies only when there is a tied championship, but from the time that
the season starts until it finishes, the coach will be laboring under the feeling
that he has an opportunity to win and therefore he will not play his substitutes who
might deserve to get into the game but who might allow the opponents a percentage

might get into some home game, &lthough they might not be valuable enough to be
taken on @ trip. Therefore this rule is actually discouraging the number of
students who indulge in physical exercise rather than encouraging them to do soe

Further than this, the BigeSix this year eut the allowable number of games
from 20 to 18, while the BigeTon, the larger organization that the Big-Six was
patterned after, has for years permitted their schools te compete in 20 games. Again,
instead of allowing greater athletic participation, they are curtailing ite

Basketball does not incur a deficit. On the other hand a tidy
net profit above equipment and coaching expenses is assured, Consequently, the
same economies that might be practiced in a sport showing a deficit would not
necessarily be imperative heres

Summing up 11 the legislation that has happened in the last year, it
seems as if there is discouragement in physical participation and also a definite
danger to the health in the legislation nade in regard to basketball numbers and
participation,

At the present time I find myself absolutely umable to pick the first ten
men that will make the trip to Norman, Influenza riddled our squad on the castern
trip and we have at the present time three or four men definitely weakened from the
effects of fue Therefore, it is necessary to take a larger squad on account of this
illness than the rules permit, and with the begimning of the season and an inexe
perienced squad I find tht this rule definitely works a handicaps, Of course, we -
will follow the rules, although I think they were discriminatory and not thought
out fully, especially when we consider the health and welfare of our boyse

 

 
  

 

 

Realizing the inequalities of rules of the Big-Six that exist between
various sports, I desired to distinguish the difference in the rules concerning

basketball and the other major sports as legisiated by the faculty representatives
and directors.

No where in other sports do they discriminate against a particular sport 4
and state that only a certain number of players may be dressed for home Cameke

Realizing the right of free speech, i dictated a statenent to Mre Horace ;
Mas our Sports Publicity Director, so that he might give it to the presse I did
not blaze away or fire back at anyone, Neither have i changed my idea one iota in
regard to the rules discussed, if the directors of the BigeSix worked out a plan
and submitted if to the faculty representatives the basketball coaches of the BigeSix
did not hear of it. in all previous legislation the. general plan has been to at least
consult the coaches and get their opinion and if the coaches desire something they
appeal to the directors, and then the matter is passed fron the directors to the
faculty representatives for legislations :

We recognize the inherent power of the directors and the faculty representatives ©
to make rules, but the mere flegewaving and lipeservice given to President Reosevelt's 4
National tefense Program by college administrators dees not strike a very responsive :
chord, when such legislation as we have mentioned is here considered. a

in many institutions no money is forthcoming from the athletic department for
intramural athletios. As a general practice, many schools speak about the earnings 4
from the athletic department going to intremurals but generally the amount contributed

is very small, At our institution not one penny is given by the athletic department

toward intramurals because they have their own financial probleme

My intent was constructive criticism and not to stir up malices

We certainly would have no desire to enter into any personal controversy
with our two good friends, Dre Helle King and Director MeFe Ahearn of Kansas States
however, neither one of them did answer this very pertinent point; Why is it
that there is a curtailment on numbers in basketball for hone games when no other
sport is legislated against by this rule?

Only ten men can be dressed for home basketball gemes which certainly
id a curtailment of numbers in sports. |

After this rule with limitations was reemphasized last year by the
directors and faculty representatives, Kansas State was the first to ‘violate the
ten-man rule by carrying 15 men to Lawrences ebrasim was the second by taking
& like number to Manhattan, and later in the season the University of Missouri .
sent 12 men to Lawrences However, the Missouri people dressed but ten, two of
the men being sent as a reward for their service during the season, while the two
othvr institutions dressed 15.

Last night Coach Drake dressed 15 men at Norman but actually played
only 10. Personally, so fr as I was concerned, he could have played all 15
and I would have offered no objection because certainly this rule is discriminatory
and paradoxicals

newspaper comments which have been made,

You may rest assured that neither Michael
nor myself intend to do anything which would
affect you personally. We have worked too
many years with you to not understand that you
have the interests of all at heart, and I mean
in a broad sense too. Furthermore, I know how
difficult it is to get your ideas into a news-
paper with the inferences which you originally
meant to be attached to these ideas. When I
was commenting over the phone to our corres-
pondents I was not then aware the comments were
for publicity purposes and had not even read
in the paper your statements. They read these
statements to me over the phone and I made some
remarks that sounded somewhat like the comments
the correspondents finally put in the paper.
"Mike" and I both think very highly of your
knowledge of the national athletic setup and
certainly wouldn't want to do anything that
vould personally reflect upon you.

Dear Doctor Allen:

I have your letter today and so will reply at once, in view of
the fact that I wanted to write you anyway regarding the following:

I have written Joe Nickell who gives the ten p. m. WibW news each
night and asked him to try to be able to announce at the close or during
his broadcast, the scores of your KU games in the East. I thot that the
hour there is ahead of our time, and that he might be able to get your
score as many of us would like to have it on night of game.

So just wanted to say to you that if yau can boost the AP or’ some
agency back trere to get the score to the Capital right after game,
maybe we can get those three games the same night. Whatever you can do
will be appreciated by a lot of fans.

And while writing I will say that you were welcome, and more, to
the little item of publicity I gave in regard to the basketball 'game'
and Doctor Naismith. I like the game and its supporters and I never
miss a chance to give any little word I can to men who are good square
shooters, sincere, sober and honest. And I will ask you, "What would ‘we!
do without basketball all fall and winter?" : ;

You mentioned Max, his work, grades, etc. As to grades, he had
written me he has troubke with the Spahish. He had no foreign language
here and so I think it is hard and tedious for him. It may be that
he ought not have taken it and I did not know that he was going to
until after he had started. But if they set it out for him, it is just
up to him to get it and he should be able to if he puts enough time on
it. I will talk to him about it over holidays. Max was a very good
student here and a very clean, sincere boy but he was not an all A
students as he was in so many activities in the school and comminity. that
he did not have time to put on his work, that is any more time than
he should have. I want him to get some passing grade in all his sub-
jects and for next semester I will help him get a line-up possibly more
down his grrove. That is if the Dean will allow that. I think Max
should be able to make suitable grades in his work. Any time you want
to check him up or caution him, it will be agreeable with me.

. Max writes that the basketball there is great and he thinks all
of you and the boys, both varsity and 'fresh{ are grand fellows. I am
not sure but I think he thinks that he is not big enough to keep pace
with those boys as I note they are all big men.

am going to write you on the football argument soon.

would write you more often if my time and the day would just hold out.

I see Max often and encourage him because I think he is a
fine boy and will undoubtedly make the Varsity here at the Universitye
He had some difficulty with his Spanish, but I do not contribute that
to anything other than the fact that he did not have language in
high schoole Max will make itg do not worry about hime He is the
right type of boy and we are much interested in that typee

Our summer coaching school was very successful,
except financially. It rained the night of our
football game and we lost money on it this
year. We are planning a game between local
high schools here in December which I believe,
