Dear Coach: Thanks a great deal for your fine letter of March 6. I appreciate the nice things you said very much. Jap helped me straighten out the photographers between halves and I am going to talk to John Cronley, Daily Okla- homan sports editor, about keeping them in a corner for next year's games. I am sure we can work it out satisfactorily and if they want some special shots of you, I don't see why we can't shoot them before the game starts. I passed your suggestions concerning the two-ball rule on to Bruce and you shouldn't have any trouble on that score hereafter. Naturally this is entirely out of my province but I showed it to Bruce anyhow and meanwhile he had re- ceived the carbon of your letter to me. Good luck tonight in your game against the Aggies. Wie know you will do a swell job of representing the Big Six in the N.C.A.A. tournament like you did two years ago. It seems to me you have even more to work with this season than you had then. Better rebounding with Black in there. He is a corker. Some of our people were bitter about not getting a chance in the playoff but the same rule clipped you last year so it looks like turn about is fair play. You have certainly been most kind and solicitous in endeavoring to land this young man for &.U. ‘Vietor Hurt was Matty Bell's assistant at S.M.U., and he called on Johnny. Vic was quite sure that he was going to attend K.U., but I understand that he has definitely made up his mind for S.MU. During the Kanses Relays we invited the outstanding seniors of the state to come up and shoot goals with the varsity and attend the Relays. Johny wrote that he thought he would come and then later he changed his mind and did not make the trip. I wrote Johmy and had a nice letter from him and I believe at one time he was quite interested _in attending E.U. I remembered what you had told me and I had planned on dropping dow to Newton to see him and while there I was going to ask you over to meet with us. | 3 But Iam pretty definitely sure now that Johnny has made up his mind to attend &.M.U. i understand on good authority that they have mage him a very attractive offer, and mless I am mistaken I do not be- lieve there is much of a chance for us. May 16, 1942 eae Forrest Allen Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: Perhaps you will remember me from our meeting on sever- al occasions:. Tieslasttoccasion being when I drove your car for your wife and daughter from Kansas City to Lawrence this spring. As I mentioned to you at that time the Newton High School Basket Ball star, Johnny Dewell, is graduating this spring end that I would like to see you contact him, trying to get him to go to K.U. He looks to me lixe he will make some University a good athlete. In fact according to his older brothers ability and the start that this boy has he might be a three letterman, Basketball, Football and Baseball. I have talked to him and also his brother Bill, who is a graduate of S.M.U. and as you perhaps know not only made a good record there, but last fall played with the Chicago Cardinals Pro-Football team and he also played with the Muskogee Western Assc. Baseball Club.(is a pitcher) As near as I can figure Johnnyts folks will het him decide which school to attend, but his brother Bill éncourages S.M.U. which Jonnny seems to consider quite strong. He is also considering Okla. Aggies. I believe you have contacted Johnny, but as near as I can get it he has not as yet made up his mind, only is not considering K.U. very strong. However I can tip you off to this that he seemed to speak quite highly of one of your Asst. Football Coaches, I believe a Mr. Hurd, a former S.M.U. Coach. Perhaps if you and Mr.Hurd could contact him you could still get him lined up with K.U.or either one of you separately might be able to land him. I would suggest that you either phone him or write him at once making an appointment with him. You perhaps understand the Newton set up which is as : I'm sorry to say not favorable to send High School grads to K.U. As Hesston is only 8 miles from Newton I would be very glad to discuss with you men a few details be- fore you see this boy, but I do not say I could do any TELEPHONE 63 ALVIN B, KING. I hope you will take this letter in the spirit in which it is written, which is that Im interested in your success as weil as K.U. I disapprove of the way some things are handled at Newton High and I think that this boy is worth the chance that one might take for his future athletic value as well as a good student and good boy.
