Mire Ind ght Keith, Southern Coach © Athlete, 751 Paryke Devi Ne ~~ Atlenta, | Dear Mre Keiths I am very glad to enclose a short article on Play". iI trust you will find it satis« factory for your next issue of the Southom Coach and Athietns With best wishes, I am Very sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education and Recreation, ECs Varsity Besketbel 1 Coathe TOURNAMENT PLAY Preparing « team and handling a tean tn tournament play is a highly specialized job even for a seasoned coach. A successful tournament team is necessarily one in which first class reserves are plentifule I have seen league championship teans fall by the wy-side in tournament play primarily on accoumt of the lack of capable substitutes. Therefore, the conch must at a2) times conserve the strength of his entire squade Four important itens stand out forcibly in handling a tournament teams namely, (1) conditioning, (2) diet, (3) rest and sleep, (4) plays le Conditioning. Only extremely light workouts should be held for one week prior to the tournsmente A canplete heart check-up as well as & urinmelysis should be made upon each mane For some time past accumilated evidence indicates that the giving of vitein P- canpound, Glysine, and dextrose would aid in restoring cardiac reserve when it is lost through various types of disease. lxperience has show the wisdan in such preetice. if this improvenent can be brought about in exhausted hearts from disease, why wuld it not be possible to improve cardiae re serve in those who are wider great physical and enotional strain? me capsule of betulin compound three times daily after meals is also indienteds A tablespoonful of dextrose sugar in a glass of lemonade ten minutes before game tine and between halves will aid a fetigued athlete. And @ tablespoon= ful of glycine threo times daily will further reduce the cardiac strain of the competing player. 2s Diet. Adhere to the three B's = boiled, tnked and the staff of life content. Celery, lettuce and plenty of vegetables should be exten at all times, the pre-game monl being the only excetions The after-game diet should be dairy dishes, soups and all of the ice crean thet a fellow can ent. Milk is indicated exept prior to gene time. I invariably permit the boys to ent all of the chilled gupefruit that they desire after a strenuous game. Athletes often confuse between thirst and hunger. If much eitrus fruit is consumed then less solids are eaten, with the result that the player enjoys a good night's reste ‘The conch or trainer should insist that each player drink at least three quarts of water daily, thereby aiding in the olimination of waste mterials fran the bodys have a separate bed to himself, if possiblee If not, fresh linen should the athletes should be poruitted to witness any of the opponents in setion infests the playerss llot weter shower bathe should never be used on a — Tournament team because of its emermting effect. Mather, # te with a good brisk turlish towel rubdown augmented with an aleohol rub to the entire body is indicated. ‘The aleohol is stiémiating and soothing to the sensory nerves of the body and induees rest and brings on sleep and 4e Playe If possible a conch should substitute often, giving the yomg players intensittent reste It is the cartimous strain where is a mental elixir oslled esprit de corps which the conch uses upon his athletes both individually end collectively. If he has made his toon believe that "a winner never quits and a quitter never wins", and if they feel with him this time-worn truism = "If you think you're beaten, you are, Ef you think thet you dare not, you don't 1A you'd like to win but think you can't, Te aluoet & clawh you wan't. Guocess begins with a fellow's will, It's all in the state of mind." = then and only then wil truly greet teams be born. Remember this - when two men mest on the street, one assumes the floor the mame is true unless both teams are layed to the same pitch. Then when that happens the tean with the better fundenentals will invariably wine : Ht 432 cy Very sincerely yours, : | , i Hi ul - ua < ce i ro<< ° ere is | = “3090 Q e : @ ore >» <2 en 8 Fes 8 a Qa U5 Seuccuees 6c fF E . =i 3 beg 2 ae ‘ : WA hs ee 5 2 Q On < Zia - z a ° ae ec ee : Ost - oSras ssa = & )F “ . Allen, Basketball Coach, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansase Dear Coach: I thought we might work up a little interview before our same if you aren't too darned busy. How would this angle strike you? You are the dean of all bas- ketball coaches in America and know the came wrongsideout from foreword to index yet I wonder if even as famous potnority as yourself ever gets too old to learn? In other words are there three or four things about basketball that you have picked up or learned within the last two or three years that you didn't know béfore? If so, can you reproduce the incident, being sure to name the team, year, and players involved? Per- haps the experience resulted disasterously to Kansas, or maybe you were able to catch it in time and save the situation. If you see any meat in this idea I think it would not only make a fine feature but would be a great inspiration to young coaches, most of whom make so many mistakes nowadays. Dear Mr. Allen: Although several recent hasketball rules! changes have macdeussedty benefitted the game, I feel that due to the increased interest in basketball and tke improved rules, these rules should not be changed. The only change ! would like to see made is in the backboard, diminishing the size and using the con- vex steel type. Basketball at the University of Maine, as well as in all of New England, has greatly increased. The attendance at our home games this year has averaged <,000 and several games were sell-outs necessitating us to turn away hundreds. This speaks well for the type of game played so why make changes in the rules that might lessen this interest? Sincerely yours, Wme C.
