Allen Athletic Director, University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr, Allen: You will doubtless be surprised to hear from me after a lapse of several years, but I am needing some help, and wondering if you can help me out as you used to. We have a position of History and assistant athletic coach in our Senior High School, which we would like to fill with a competent young man. We would like someone who is capable of teaching the History, assisting with athletics, especially football and basketball, and who, above all, is a gentleman and can be depended upon to treat boys as young gentlemen. The History position will be four classes in our Senior High School. This is one less class than the normal load. The athletic work will come after 3:00 o'clock in the after- noon. In our athletic setup, we will have a coach and two assistants who will help the coach in the afternoons with major athletics. The athletic work will run the full nine months. After basketball season, they will have spring football practice, softball, some baseball, and some track. However, our chief sports and interest are football and basketball, The salary for this position will be on the same scale as that of our regular teachers, except he will have one less class to teach and will be paid an additional $340.00 ag athletic assistant. Our beginning salary this year for the Bachelor Degree, without experience, is $2,000.00. The $340.00 additional would make $2,340.00 for the position. We also allow $20.00 per year.for experience up to and including eight years. Married men maintaining a family receive $180.00 more than single men. Dr. Forest C. Allen 2. May 10, 1946. If you have anyone that you can recommend for this position, please let me know at once, so that I may get in touch with them. I assure you I will keep your letter in the strictest confidence, I am well acquainted with your | high school at Medicine Lodge. I spoke out there about five or six years ago. You have a fine school and you are located in a very progressive and aggressive com- munity « There are a number of good men returning from the service who have played under me and I. will be happy to suggest someone to you in the very near future, Last night we played at Manhattan and today at one o'clock we are leaving for Lincoln, Nebraska, and so I would rather answer your letter fully after I have had some — for reflection. ‘Sincerely yours, : | Director of Physical Education, FCA s MF Varsity Basketball Coach. fee Member North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges H. Ata meeting with my board of education sometime ago they made it a ‘must! that I must get a new coach next year. In fact, it is our plan to hire two men one that can handle the football and assist with track and another for basketball who will also assist in track. One of the above men would have two classes in Physical Education. : I am particularly interested in someone that has played under you. I have several requests asking that we get a 'Phog Allen man', so I am writing to you early enough to get it before you. We have a high school of 225 students,24 teachers in the system, total enrollment of around 556 students. We're located about 35 miles south of Pratt. We compete with such teams as Anthony, Caldwell, Harper, Kiowa, Kingman, Pratt, Alva, Coldwater, Greensburg. Up tntil the last two years we ave been able to hold our ow, but lately we have been on the decline. At the present time we are paying $2500.00 for the school year, but we can beat that for a good man that has and can produce. We will consider inexperienced man if he is up and coming. I thought I might drop you this information and if you do know of anyone £ would like to contact hin. With kind personal regards, I am Very truly yours, 4 1 SD errr ned H. C. Allen Department of Physical Education University of Kansas Lewrence, Kansas Dear Dre Allen: Up to now, neither of the people whom you recon= mended for basketball coach for Emporia has applied for the positione We are still looking for sameone. It frequently happens that a person who has been a substitute on a team will make as good a coach as will the regular or even the star player. The important things are that he knows basketball, is highly intelligent and is a man of excellent character e We hope you will keep us in mind and that some~ time in the near future you may have someone to recommend.
