And then we have received many letters from others ef yeu whe took a little time to write. I am queting seme excerpts from these letters se that @1l ef yeu may appreciate the humer, the ceurage, the vision, and the desires of these valerous lads whe left their hemes and everything they held dear fer an eppertunity toe de their bit. Our sincerest desire is that they may return te a lamd as fine as the ene they are dreaming and planning for. In eur tewn, here in Lawrence, we have erganized a Civic Action Committee, and the primal purpese is te make Lawrence a place te which veterans will return and say, “This is the way we wanted it." Our purpese is twe-feld: te have a construction and city face lifting plan which will encourage veterans te re- turn te Lawrence and te previde many ef them with early employment; and, te areuse greater civic pride threughout the cemmunity. The. only requisite fer membership en this hand-picked cemmittee is that each man shall be a werker, ef ceurse, with ne cempensatien only te give te eur returning beys the best tewn that we can make it. That means rehabilitatien work, pesitiens, preper reception - net when ceming but when staying, and te let the beys knew that we darn well appreciate what they have deme fer use There will be me maudlin sympathy and ne tendency te treat the returning veteran with anything but the highest respect. You get the idea, boys. Yeu just want te be a regular guy and you want your place in the cemmunity, a right te live and leve and fight fer the things you believe are right. incidentally, fer the whele country. That is what we are hoping fer Lawrence, and The American Legion men whe are in Lawrence, and others whe were a little tee eld te fight, want to preserve the things here that you want. Te Lte Jehn A. Oread, we want te say that we are darn preud ef this fighting Texan who-is an adepted Jayhawker by reason of his -° taking his master's degree here in Jayhawkville.
