H. Browne, head basketball coach at the University of Nebraska, during the 1936-37 season. This year Coach Browne is starting his sixth season as coach of the Cornhusker basketball squad. Bzowne became associated with the University of Nebraska as freshman basketball and football and head varsity baseball coach in 1930-31. In 1932 Browne became head basketball coach and assistant varsity football coach at Nebraska. In football he was a valuable assistant to Dana X. Bible for five years and last season performed the same duties for Major Lawrence "Biff" Jones. Browne's work dealt chiefly with the ends but he was of untold value to the team as head scout. Coach Browne has been a member of the research and visual inves- tigation committee of the National Association for Basketball Coaches and has written an untold number of technical articles on basketball and anysical education activities for national publications. Previous to 1930 Browne had headed the department of physical education at Lincoln high school for 10 years, and coaches the football and basketball teams. His football teams lost only three games during that 10-year period, attracting national attention by defeating Lane Tech of Chicago and twice turning back the strong Waite high eleven of Tcledo, Oiiio. Browne's high school basketball teams, playing difficult schedules, won better than 75 per cent of its games and three times were state champions. He was born in Pert William, Ohio, July 18, 1899. Browne graduated from Morton high school, Richmond, Indiana; attended E.rlham College at Richmond and State Nermal at LuCrosse, Wisconsin. He was graduated from the American Gymnastic School at Iudianapolis, I.diana, with a Bachelor of Physical Education degree and received Bachelor of Science and Muster of Arts degrees at the University of Nebraska. Browne is a captain in the Nebraska National Guard, commanding Headquarters Co., 110th Quartermaster Regiment. He is a member of the Phi Egsilon Kappa and Sigma Pui Epsilon, social fraternities, and Phi Delta Kappa, educational fraternity. He is a Mason, Shriner and Jester. Browne is married and has two children, Dorothy Jean and Billy. The 1936-37 Final Big Six Standings Nebraska.... Sf eet, Pts. Opp. NepraskGs .saaevee: e 800 378 304 VOROOR yc iicvcae BO 5800. Allen Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doc: I am enclosing the 1937-1938 Big Six basketball officials list. There have been several changes in individuals and several changes in the dates of the games since this list was first made up. As far as I know now, the enclosed list is correct. However, to avoid any chance of a mistake I suggest that you drop a card to the officials of your home games shortly before the date they are scheduled to appear. I am also enclosing the names and addresses of the Big Six basketball officials. As you have observed there are four blanks in the basketball officiating appointments. As soon as the officials accept these assignments we shall notify the schools concerned. aoe! GF. Veenker, Secretary GFV :JH Big Six Directors Encl. January 15, 1938. W. H. Brome, Dr. F. G. Alien, Hugh MeDermott, Frank Root, Gentl emen : It appears that I have thrown a wrench into the machinery with regard to the use of Bask-O-Lite goals. At our meeting I expressed a favorable opinion for the use of these baskets, but only Dr. Allen seemed to have the same idea. The others wanted a further test. | The pair of goals we had were loaned on a 50 day trial. Actually we kept them about six weeks hop to find out what the other schools wished. With no news av le and a decision necessary we decided to return the baskets. o foday a letter from Menze says that all other schools have installed to¢new baskets, It rather puts me out on a limb for Missouri is the only one not using the new goals after its coach had urged their adoption. This report was transmitted to our business manager who says that the decision not to buy this year will not be changed. : ‘From a playing or shooting viewpoint I think that a team will do as well with one basket as with the other. Where Bask-0-Lite goals are installed there will be no need to change to the old type as far as Missouri is concerned, but in Columbia all gemes will be played with old type baskets. To say the least, this lack of uniformity is not wise, but there is no way open now for me to correct it. In the two Colorado games here last week we installed an adaptation a ot satisfaction. A red light was placed above each back board with a manually operated switch at the scorers bench, A student closed the switch as the ball dropped through the basket. With very little practice the boys imitated the flash of the Bask-0-Lite goal with such accuracy that most spectators did not know of the change. We plan to use this signal in all gemes this year. Should several of the conference members protest our use of the old i goals I will request a reconsideration of our decision, Please let me know for I am anxious each of you be satisfied. .
