Dear Dr. Allen:

I should like tc ask your cooperation in giving me
information concerning Dr. Lapp. My understanding is that
the University is discontinuing his services at the end of
this semester.

We have considered Dr. Lapp one of the best minds
we have turned out here and since I am quite sure of his
character I should like very much to elicit your cooperation
in telling me what the situation is which necessitates drop-
ping him in this manner. This is not an attempt to void your
action, but to inform ourselves what the circumstances are,
in order that we may be most helpful to Dr. Lapp in the fu-
ture.

I should very much appreciate your writing me fully
and frankly and I shall be glad to hold this information con-
fidential, if you so wish.
