Won 5, Lost 1} Written in the reeords as one
of the most disastrous seasons in LiU,'s history, the
1939-l.0 season will probably go down as such. However,
let's look a little deeper than the won and lost column.
Loyola played 19 games and scored 656 points to their
opponents 675. Thus Loyola was outscored by only 19 points,
or an average of 1 point per game over the entire season
and about ls points per game losts Playing one of the
toughest schedules in it's history; the team, lacking
helghth, reserves, and experience, turnéd in very creditable
showings against major opponents, Of the six teams coms
peting in the Metropolitian Sport's Writers Tourney; Loyola
played four, along with Kansas U, finalist and winner of the
National A,A.U. Championship, Butler, Rice, Oklahoma A & M,
Southern Methodist, Carnegie, and many other top-notch teams,
The Ramblers, combining a cautious, deliberate offence with
an air tight defense played many of their opponents to a
standstill, losing late in the game because of fatigue and
Lack of heighth, Playing this type of ball the Ramblers to
their high scoring, intercity rival, De Pauleegl’to 15. This
was the lowest score ever rung up in the series and indicates
the type of games that the Ramblers lost. So in view of the
manner in which the games were played, we are forced to say
that although this team will never be rated as L,U,'s greatest
it will not go down as the poorest either, but rather an
example of what hard work , spirit, and superb coaching can
accomplish,
