Loyola then defeated St.John's and then lost to Long Island U in the finkls of the New York Sport Writers Tournament at Madison Square Garden, #Loyola was recognized National Intercollegiate Champ- lons, 1929-40, during which season a successive winning streak was extended to 434 gamés before the team was defeated by Purdue, Basketball was organized at Loyola as ah intercollegiate sport in 19245, since that time Varsity Basketball has been Coached by Leonard D. Sachs. During that time Loyola has won 189 games against their opponents 109 and has scored 8878 points against their opponents 7560. From the teams Coached by Len Sachs four men have been chosen on the All-American team. In 1929-30 Charlie (Feed) Murphy was unanimously chosen to the center position. in 1947 Loyola was again represented on the mythical All-American when Marv Colen was chosen to a Guard position and aclaimed as one of greatest to have ever played the game, Again in 1938-39 members of the Ramblers were selected on the All-American team. This time, however, not one but two men were chosen."Wibs" Kautz and "Big" Mike Novak were both selected and it was agreed by the Sport Writers that neither one could be ommitted and the team still be called All-American. In his three years at Loyola "Wibs" Kautz broke the all time scoring record twice, once as a Junior when he scored 289 points to smash the old record of 219 lead by Marv Colen. Then again when a Senior he scored 3l:1 points to break his own record. In his three years Wibs scored a total of 813 points for an all time Loyola High. The ~ former record was 196 by Charlie "Feed" Murphy. PAGE 8
