December 12, 1940 Mr. Phog Allen, Athletic Director, Kansas University, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Mr. Allen: It was in 1926 that I attended Kansas University for a semester and had my freshmen basketball under Mr. Bunn. Of course I did not stay long because of scholastic and financial difficulties but later did finish my college education at the University of Iowa where I also played varsity basketball. It just occurred to me that you are coming back to Chicago in January and bringing your fine squad to play at the Coliseum as a head-liner in one of the double- headers. Recalling the men who offiéiated your game last year, I believe you knew nothing about them. Now my point in writing is this; I have worked a long time, coached in high school athletics and have officiated many high school and college games. Mr. H. V. Porter of the National High School Federation, 'Shorty' Ray, who edits the Federation Play Book and also conducts the Athletic Officials Association's Interpretation Meetings, of which I am a member, and last but not least, Dutch Lonberg of Northwestern University and one of your former pupils, can all vouch for my ability. When Mr. Art Morse submits the names of officials, could you use your influence and ask for me? Mr. Morse, of course knows my work since I handled the St. Mary's College (Winona,Minnesota) - Macomb Teachers! game in one of the double-headers two years ago. Anything you could do in the way of heaping me break into the 'big time! would be greatly appreciated. ‘Thanking you, I am Sincerely yours, Joseph Schwartz, (/ 6966 Sheridan Road, / Chicago (
