CASH IF NOT BASKETBALL ‘NEW YORK, Dec. 28 (AP)—Inva- for one-point victories such as his on of the East by basketball teams ®rom other sectors has failed to standardize the type of play, Dr. F. C, (Phog) Allen of the University of Kansas, said today “but we will con- tinue to come here to give our kids a trip:and to get that check.” “Sectional styles of play differ more now than ever. before,’ Allen ee at a luncheon attended by coaches from all corners of the na- tion, “but we can get $2000 for com- ing here compared with $300 we get for an NCAA tourney at home.” Allen . criticized the colleges coaches for attempting to stifle ideas brought forth by high school tutors. “Tt} is ‘the high school coach, a teacher rather than an athlete, who has the ideas and spends the time ‘on esearch, and those _ teacher- coaches are the backbone of the gamey’ 1 : James St. Clair of Southern Methodist; University, head of the National Collegiate Association bas- ketball rules committee, said he hoped there would be little rule changing during the war “‘but I can see no reason for freezing them for the duration. If there is some- ‘thing bad in the code, we should get it out at once.” His idea was seconded by Harold Olsen of! Ohio State, who also listed Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana as the powerhouses of the Big Ten. Josh Cody, formerly of Vanderbilt and now the duration-coach of the Temple five, expressed a preference team scored over Washington State! last week end, and Lt. (j.g.) Dyke’ Raese of the North Carolina Pre- Flighters lamented that with the season hardly started he already had, tutored two different squads. | “We are graduating them every | two weeks now, and our lineups | change accordingly. Gus Broberg of, Dartmouth looms as the star of our present outfit. -. : Frank Keaney of Rhode Island State, whose team is striving for a record of two points for every min-| ute of action, took issue with Allen! and said there was no need of stan- dardizing the styles of play. . “Give the crowds action,” Keaney | continued, “and if some coach puts up a screwy defense, use a screwier offense. Then if you lose, pivot and go home.” .Ernie Holbrook, young Southern Californias mentor, and Jack Friel of Washington State listed the Univer- sity of Washington as the outstand- ing five on the West coast, and Ev Shelton of. Wyoming rated Brigham: Young as the Rocky Mountain best following .Colorado’s withdrawal fro minter-collegiate athletics for the winter. | In concluding his argument that intersectional games hindered the development of basketball, Allen said he intended to follow the ad- vice of another midwestern coach who suggested that the way to win in the East “is to forget all about plays, swing from the floor \and play the post.” \N_ DAILY. You will get a lot of good you _Yes, we enjoyed our trip very moh traveling with U.S.C. - They were good fellows, and since U.S.C. won all their games and Kansas won all of hers, naturally it made traveling together doubly pleasant. é g Congratulations on your pledging Zeta Beta Tau! With all good wishes, I am Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, FCA: AH Varsity Basketball Coach. HL RODEN ThE TNIV ERSIFY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. UNIVERSITY PARK= LOS ANGELES January 7, 1943 Dr. Forrest C. Allen, Physical Ed. Dept., University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Dr. Allen: I just thought I would drop you a line to let you know where I am and what I am doing. The writer of this letter, as the signature will show, is Marvin Levand, and here is hoping you remember this "kid." I remember the last time we were together was for the K.U.-0.U. game last season at Norman. We rode the train together down to Norman, and it was one swell time, even if we didn't win the game. At that time, when I was still in high school, I was planning on attending the University of Missouri. We had a nice conversation about that, and I have always appreciated the things you have told me and the fine esteem you also have of my father, Mr. "Max." When you received my announce- ment of having graduated from high school, you sent me a fine letter which I shall always keep. Well, instead of ending up at Missouri, I am now at the University of Southern California, but my major is still journal- ism. I noticed in today's paper where your swell team just walloped M.U., so that kind of reminded me of "old times,” thus the reason for the letter. With the three years experience behind me of reporting, uhder the guidance of our friend Jack Copeland, I was working as a sports reporter on the school paper, the Daily Trojan. After a while, however, I thought I would try something new, so now I am Publicity Director for the El Rodeo, the SC yearbook. It seems as though K.U. and SC played side by side on the eastern trip during the holidays, and both teams did a mighty fine job. We play California Friday night, and I am anxiously awaiting the game. I am just wondering who I would root for if SC should play K.U.? 3 How are all the boys on your team? Say hello to Ray Evans for me and John Buescher also, if he is still around. They are a couple of swell boys, as are all the men on your team. I don't recall at the moment just how many of them I still know personally, but here is wishing the best of luck to them. I am in the Naval ROTC and V-1, so I should be here a while.
