Dr. Forrest C. Allen, Basketball Coach, Kansas University, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Phog: Last season, at our convention, I happened to be appointed Chairman of the Naismuth Memorial Committee. This committee has met and as the result of these meetings have several sculptors working on various types of memorial. We are, however, at a loss for the want of a good picture or mask of the old gentleman. I am wondering if you would allow us to have the mask you have in your possession, so that we can carry on this work. The committee will assure you of its safe return. If impossible to concede us this, could you have photographs taken of the mask - front and side - views, and send them to us. Thanking you for your cooperation in this matter and my good wishes for your continued success, I am, ENTINE LENTZ, VLi:k February 4, 1941 Mir. Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: Do you think it would be an unlucky procedure to have all of your basketball players numbered with the No. 13 and then designate them by No. 13-A, 13-B, etc.? Maybe you think you haven't any superstitions. But don't be too sure. Practically everybody, including the business man, the actor, the baseball player, the professor has kept some of the beliefs of his ancestorse At any rate, whether YOU are superstitious or whether YOU are not, we believe that you will thoroughly enjoy Brewton Berry's new book entitled YOU & YOUR SUPERSTITIONS. As fascinating as fiction, written in a pleasant informal style, this book reveals a genuine tolerance of people with all their inconsistencies, Order through your local bookseller or the enclosed prepaid postal order card is for your convenience. Very truly yours, LUCAS BROTHERS & 2:13 ' : eae P.S. I will guarantee you will like this book enough to give a copy to a friend who believes money placed "on the nose" of a black horse ridden by a jockey wearing a yellow shirt, will Pay e -GHOSTS -DEVILS mm AECG ie -OMENS WR Mey elt mee | INTERESTING THINGS. . Here Brewton Berry, professor of - Sociology, with a Doctor’s degree from Edinburgh, follows the foibles of mankind down through the ages in a subject that is older than civili- zation, but ever new. Devils, ghosts, witches, omens and other interesting things like that peep out in print to tell you what it means to laugh be- fore breakfast, what happens when you drop a dish rag, and how to make a barren tree bear fruit. From him you learn about necro- mancy, cleromancy, and scapulim- ancy, and what happened. when Fabius Maximus was elected for a third term. _ Touched on are the superstitions of actors, baseball players, farmers, golfers, gamblers and just plain people, the whole woven into an interesting story with this antidote supplied by the author: — “A laugh is the easiest, wisest answer to all that’s queer.” _ Prof. Berry. goes on to say that security is the only cure for super- stition, presenting his case as follows: “Why are we superstitious, then? First, because man, who is not too squeamish about his logic, is a con- servative creature, who holds ten- aciously to old ideas, customs, and trinkets, even after he has learned better, and long after their original purpose has been lost and forgotten. And, second, because with all his knowledge and science, civilized life is still uncertain, insecure, and pre- carious; and something has to be done about it. Superstition, then, is but one chapter in the story of man's age-long quest for security. And security will smash superstition, where education, prohibition, ser- mons, satire, and science have mis- erably failed." Thus the author sums up super- stition and its cure, but places the cure so deep in Utopia that he prac- tically promises a long life for the disease. 2 So we will go on trying to keep from spilling salt, breaking a mirror, killing spiders, sitting at a table with thirteen, while we religiously carry a rabbit's foot, a lucky coin, and wear a bag of asafetida around our necks, Long live superstition, if for no other reason than because it is one of the last ramparts of human fraility in a machine age. You'll like this book if you like people. Febrmry 5, 1941 Mre Te.
