STANFORD UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF MEN STANFORD UNIVERSITY, CALIFORNIA December 18, 1941 Dr. Forrest C. The tickets were delivered to me on Monday but in view of the cancellation of the game, I returned them immediately. Charly will have to travel to North Carolina if he desires to see the game. The Commanding General of the Ninth Corps Area has cancelled many sporting events here on the coast as the result of defense activities and practice blackouts, which the authorities have attempted to make us believe are the real thing. I happen to be a person who does not scare very easily, and while I believe that we should prepare for eventualities, I am somewhat disgusted at the method used. I can't believe that people are quite that gullible. He came in last week and made inquiry and I told him that I would write you and see if it would be possible to obtain them. I imagine the tickets are $4.40 unless they have gone up. I did not want to presume on your friendship by promising him any tickets until I had written you. I know that conditions change from year to year and I preferred to write and see if it would be possible to obtain for him the two ticketse Wow, he is not certain thet he can make the trip end since this is — merely an inquiry I would appreciate it if you would write and let me know what the chances are on obtaining them for him and he can make his decision. # I trust that everything is going well with you and Bonnie. Things are moving along 0.X. with us with the exception of our football team which seems not to be doing too well at present. We are playing Kansas State this afternoon, and if we win everything will be lovely. My basketball prospects are fairly good, but I am afraid that I am going to have the same difficulty in ny basketball that Gwinn Henry is having in his football. There are about five of the boys that are training on the football team and there are five of the fellows on the basketball team who haven't been training, but will if they play. JOHNNIE BAUM CONWAY SPRINGS, KANSAS November 29, 1941. Mr. John Bunn, — Dean of Men, Stanford University, California. Dear Johnny: Joe Bloomer and Mrs. Bloomer came in to see the Kansas-Missouri game last Saturday. Joe lives at Claflin, Kansas, and he is very wealthy. You lkmow he had a terrific struggle for a long time and they tried to sell that old farm out there at Cleflin. They had a big mortgage on it and no- body would take it. They tried every way possible to get rid of it. Then you know what happened - they struck oil - the biggest pool in Kansas, the Bloomer pool. Gosh, I was glad that no one had taken it. Joe and his wife and little girl were by the house and they are levely people. Joe asked me if I sould get him three Rose Bowl tickets. I told him the only fellow I plagued to death was John Bunn, and I would write and see if it would be possible for you to get tickets for good old Joe. You remember that storybook finish, John. The bases were loaded, Kansas was three runs behind and it was in the 9th inning - and Kansas was playing Missouri. Joe Bloomer was pitch- ing that game. There were two down, it was the last of the ninth, and Joe Bloomer was at bat. ‘The Missouri pitcher wound up and fed a fast, high, outside ball to Joe. He swung on it and it sailed over the fence into Mississippi Street. That was the last game of Joe’s intercollegiate career. I have always thought that some fellows really got their desserts, and I thought Joe got his. I have talked to him often about it and the smiles wreathe his face when he recalls that. Wow, John, if you can make him smile again I will apprec- iate it. He is rolling in oil and I kmow he would love to see you and would appreciate it if you could do anything for him. Would you write to Joe at Claflin and give him the dope, or write me and I will carry on? My kindest regards to you and Bonnie and Mrs. Huff. Very sincerely yours, FCA:AH : Director of Physical Education and Recreation, : Varsity Basketball and Baseball Coach. Decenber 25 1941. Mr. John Bunn, Dean of Men, Stenford University, Galifornia. Dear John: I am enclosing herewith Mr. C. G. Bayles cheok for $9.08 for two Rose Bowl tickets. Wr. Bayles is leaving Lawrence on the 26th of December. Will the tickets be mailed out before that time? If so, they should be sent directly to Mr. ©. %. Bayles, Superin- tendent, Buildings and Grounds, University of Kansas. I would appreciate it if you can let us know approxi- mately when the tickets will be mailed. Thanking you for your many courtesies, I am Sincerely yours, | Direotor of Physical Miucation and Recreation, FCA:Au . Varsity Basketball and Baseball Coach. STANFORD UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF MEN STANFORD UNIVERSITY, CALIFORNIA November 26, 1941 Dr. Forrest C. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: Thank you for your letter of November 15. Regardless of whether Stanford is chosen for the Rose Bowl or not, there are conference agreements whereby each school is entitled to an allotment of tickets. It will, therefore, be possible to secure a ticket for Charles Bayles. The tickets are $4.40 each, plus mailing charges for registration, etc. If he is planning definitely to go, he should let me have this information together with his check for tickets at the earliest possible moment. Lt am glad to have your summary of athletic prospects at Kansas. The football team seems to have gone up and down. I gather from What you do not Say, rather than from what you do say, that there is some lack of discipline and training. I know this can't happen on the basketball squad. You may know that Brother Pete is up to his neck in work this year. Every able-bodied man here in school is in the ROTC so Pete is running classes all day and my guess is some nights. I shall be glad to pass on your greeting to him and to Clark. Cordially yours, Ure Lowis &. Bullock, Greenville, North Carolina. Doar Mre Bullocks . Mrs. Allen and. Robert D. Baldwin _ Riverview Drive Morgantowm, West Virginia Thank you so much for your very good letter of Nov. 2 inviting le to be your gest at Morgantown this week-end. Wothing would delight me more than to do just this thing, but } i am sorry to say thet I'll have to take a raincheck. Five years ago the Beard of Regents issued an order electing a new Director of Athletics and making me Head of the Department of Physical Education and coach of basketball. Our basketball team was winning consistently and our football team was lesing consistently. Therefore, some argued that the Director of Ath- letics was spending more time on his basketball than he was in — furthering the football interests. So I have nothing to do with the administration of athletics except in my basketball coaching. I've been very happy with this change ~ so much of the grief has departed from my work along with the football. - So I want to thank you and assure you that nothing would delight me more than to have a nice visit with you and your son Bobs | My son, Sob, graduated last yoar and he is now at the University of Pennsylvania as a freshman in their medical college. Eleanor, our youngest, is a junior at the University of Pennsylvania. She wented to go along with Bob, doubtless to get away from home and be on her own, and we thought it might be e good thing for her. She took her first two years here and was very happy, but I believe» _ that being away from home will give her a new viewpoint which is always helpful. Mrs. Lindley, the wife of Chancellor Lindley, is living across from us in an apartment at Sth and Louisiana. However, she is building a new home and expects to be in it at University Heights some time about Dec. 1. 7 _We were grieved to hear of the death of Mrs. Baldwin, I know ' hew lonely you and Bob mst be, but I am sure that this loss has made you and Bob more companionable under the circumstances.
