You certainly have two thougand very active youngsters, Iam sure. I have often wondered about Johnny. I had heard that he was not ina uatnnns that he cared to publicize. 7 Mrs. Allen is taking care of our five-months-eld grand~ child, Jane's daughter, Jane was our second youngster, and Eleanor was born here in Lawrence. We have five grandchildren. I am mailing you a Jayhawk Rebounis, a letter that I get out to the boys in the service each month. It tells about the Allen family, and a lot of things you perhaps care little about, but I thought © you might enjoy a part of it because there is a yarn about ea basketball — gane that I know if it was Warrenaburg playing would register a hundred per cent with you. The Hirst Presbyterian Church Hredonia, Kansas March 16, 1945 Mr. Forrest C. Allen, ' Director of Physical Education, * University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. My dear Dr. Allen: I'm writing this note to assure you that I appreciate your kindnesses to my boy, Jim. He loves sports; but physically is not built to excell in them. Another thing that haw handi- capped him in competitive athletics is that all the way through he has been on the average much younget than most of the ones in his class in school. But his connection with athletics has been a grand thing for him. It has been especially nice of you to take him along and encourage him. We feel very kindly to you for it. Jim is now 18 and,as I am sure you know, he has gone into the Navy and is at Great Lakes. He passed the Eddy test and so I presume will be in line for further training and the advancement that goes with that training. Congratulations on your stand for higher ideals in Inter-collegiate athletics. One of the thrills to me has been the degree of idealism that there has been in sports. It is just too bad when it slips. All power to you and others in holding it high. Very sincerely yours, Fanon E Moody The . C. Allen Director of Physical Education Varsity Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doc: I have your letter relative to the basketball officiating. I too think it is best to have the same two officials working at both places, and as to crossing off officials from our list whom we object to, I feel that we are justified in doing this anytime we have lost confidence in the official. I have doneit in tlh past and will continue to do it, as I don't like to go into a game if I have no confidence in the men working. The matter of a few dollars expense should not enter into it; after all this is ow bread and butter. We had the best night of the season against you. It wasn't that Kansas was playing poorly, we simply were hitting for once in the season. We mde 35% of our attempts, against a season's play of 24%. We would have been tough for anybody that night. Hope that all is well with you and yours. Bob and his wife will be home this weekend for fifteen days. I hope to get in some golf with him. Keith was home the middle of March; he seems to be getting along okay. Best wishes. sifcerdly, _eseee ketball Coach April 30, 1945. Mre Louis E. Menge, Basketball Coach, . Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa. Dear Loule: I am still congratulating you on your fine championship team. But before we meet I want to make myself plain so there will be no misunderstanding at the moment we get together. First, ‘I om hoping that we oan have the same officials work at both places. A# each school pays half of the expenses of these officials, I see no reason why this could not come to pass. By way of explanation I wish to say that Parke Carroll has worked a great mumber of years for me, and I eam frank in saying in my opinion he has never worked one satisfactory game. Bug Knox has worked two games, and I would not want poorer ganos than he has officiated. Pavetace, Unie we tas foakcd oak < enw + to use in any games any more, and those are the two I just menti I aa writing you ahead of time so that you can be think- dee about officials that you weil like to use, and I will be doing like~ wise. I hope that they can work the games at both places. fi fle I know Reaves Peters hag always talked about saving money but they don't do it in football, and when a game becomes important enough through the unhappiness of coaches in having to take men that they do not like, then I think it is time to do something about it. By way of explanation, Louie, I want to explain why I took Parke Carroll and Bud Knox. Frankly, I thought we would finish in about fourth place, and I thought, Well, we'll get licked anyhow and I am not pleased with Knox, but I was just curious enough to want to try first estimation of him was wrong. And B : ¢ 5 i r Carroli, I had had him on the taboo list for a good mmy years, but I he se up there I would try him again. When I sur- prised myself by a tie, prior to the Iowa State game, then the - Was on me and I could do no complaining, of course. We couldn't won that ball game with you with a lead pencil if we had had one of our players keeping score. You be&t us so decisively bogey hg was no question that either official influenced the game a bit. But I saw enough that I _ don't want either of them any more. : i tak cialis & aeblies niet ot the Sates Ss nee Peon so that he will know how I feel about those two officials. ‘This is oon- fidential, of course, but I wouldn't mind telling either one of them, or having either one of them seeing this letter. ae.
