November 10, 1943. Lieut. C. A. Michelman, University of Kensas. Dear Lieutenant Michelman: I want you to kmow how very much I appreciated your graciousness in putting some of the basketball players ahead of the group to receive their pay last week-end. After I talked with you I had not expect this would be done, but since you did this favor I want you to know that I appreciate it very much. We have such a short time to drill the boys that men like Harold “Sparky” MeSpadden, who was one of our pleyers last year, are greatly missed when we work on formations. For that reason I want you to know that we are very grateful for your kind sonsideration. Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, PCA:AH Varsity Basketball Coach. November 10, 1943. Ur. R. W. Higgins, Pred Medart Manufacturing Co., St. Louis 18, Mo. Dear Mr. Higgina: For thatireason many of these army and navy groups just get out and play shimmy, so to speak. I oan envisage what would happen if we just let a group scrimmage in basketball without anyone teach- ing them the rules. I believe this is a parallel illustration. ‘The fact that you get so many requests for rule books shows me that apparently your advertising is getting across the thought that this is a game and not just a piece of apparatus. I believe if in |. your advertising you continue to stress that it will still bear fruit. Now, regarding the matter of providing basketball with an adjustable feature that will permit the height of the basket to be changed. That also is a difficult problem to get action upon. I believe that this should wait until after the war because it depends upon the coaches and physical directors in the various high schools and junior high schools. Things are so unstable as regards the tenure of the people now in those jobs that I do not believe they would be interested in working on a project that is at the present uncertain. However, as you suggest, if I am in or through St. Louis I will cer- tainly stop in and have a talk with you. I would like to know more about Roy Weinzettel and Bill Robinson. _ Where are the boys and how are they doing? Very sincerely yours, | Direetor of Physics. Allen Director of Physical Education & Varsity Basketball Coach % University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allens This is in response to your recent letter to Mr. Banashek con= cerning the matter of Rules books for Goal-Hi. We fully appreciate that we have not made the most of distribut-— ing Goal-Hi Rules books, however, we do propose to give Goal=Hi a real shot in the arm in the Advertising Program that we will launch immediately that we can determine when the "duration" is about to end and we will be privileged to go back to manufactur- ing our regular lines of equipment including Goal-Hi equipment. At the moment we have not too many Goal-Hi standards on hand and once they are gone there will be no more for the duration. This is one of the many items that we manufacture that can not be produced further according to the War Production Board re- strictions. We are doing a fairly good job of distributing Goal-Hi Rules books regardless of the fact that we do not have many of the outfits left on hand for sale. We never fail to get a half doz- en to a dozen requests for rules books each day and of course each and every one of those requests is answered promptly and the Rules book is furnished without charge. As a matter of fact any requests that we receive from dealers is answered without costs and dealers are advised that there is no charge for this book. We doubt very much that any of the dealers are charging the $1.00 amount that we originally advertised, which some dealers still mention in their catalogue. Incidentally, Dr. Allen, we have not heard a great deal lately as concerns the matter of providing basketball backstops with an adjustable feature that will permit height of the baskets to be changed depending on the classification of the players involv- ed. Will you be so kind as to give us at your convenience latest information cencerning this matter and if perchance you should b either in St. Louis or passing through St. Louis in the near f t= ure by all means drop in and see us. reat Cordially yours, uy, P 7 FRE MANUPAGTURING CO. Im many of the vertising spaces for Goal-Hi, in Lewe & Campbell's catalog, the R. S. Slliott Arms catalog, I note a lack cf emphasis on rules. In the Lowe & Campbell booklet it states that the Goal- Hi rules ere fer sale for $1.00 and given free with each Goal- standard purchased. But if sold separately they sell for $1.00. I had been looking forward to your appearance, as I believe the war time emergency is the only thing that will make it possible for the Big Six to allow such competition. I had been hoping that perhaps your boys coulduse part of their Christmas leaves for the tournament, since some of the schools are doing that. Just in case something turns up to alter the situation, I am going to leave your spot open until the first of November, when I will query you just once more to see if there's any chance, It appears we are going to have a fine tournament with eight good teams and I.ve already agreed with Ab Curtis and John Lance as two of the officfals. If anything breaks before November, you'll let me know, won't you? Dear Doctor Allen: I was happy to revé@ive your letter on the basketball tournament and to note your interest in the event. The question of transportation ‘and also hotels in this war-jammed town) has been in my mind quite a bit as we started feeling our way along on this year's tournament. However, I have about decided to hold the field wo eight teams-- none from any staggering distance--- which will cut down the travel requirements considerably. With the smaller field, it is vital that we have the, best possible field--- and what would appeal more to Uklahoma Vity fans than Oklahoma, Vklahoma “ggies and Sansas? The rest of the field probably would come from the “outhwest conference, with perhaps one service team entered. The fans here have been used to morning, afternoon and night sessions with 16 teams {we even had 18 year before last! but I believe the reduction to eight_top notch teams would be even more appealing and that Sooner-Aggie-! ayhawk rivalry should whet the appetite of even the most discriminating fan. : Basketball squads being comparatively small and the distance from “awrence here not excessive I can't seen Wow you would be criticized for travelling to a tournament where your boys could get so much good experience in such a short time. The Santa ¥e's stream- liner, which is an all-chair car train, would deliver you in here on Sunday night before the tournament and back in Lawrence the following Thursday afternoon, if you wanted to shave the time that closely. The question of the navy's 48-hour rule comes up naturally. With Uklahoma, it won't make any difference mw since they will be able to get back mmmxma home each night, if need be. The only other coach with whom I have had any correspondence on that rule, is Joe Davis of Rice. He said that he had talked with a couple of his boys wnd that they were anxious to give up part of their Christmas leave in d : S 3 Order to THE DA IT kh OKLAHOMAN OKLAHOMA Ci: at oe ee ee THE FARMER*+STOCKM’AWN Phone 2-1211 come here for the tournament. “hat might be the case elsewhere, although I wouldn't want any coach to put any pressure on his boys in that direction, Adds Davis: "As for myself, I certainly hope we can return. We enjoyed it very muéh last year and felt that it did a great deal toward building our team." I am fervently hoping that you will be able to overcome any difficulties and enter the tournament. As I said before, I believe your boys would profit immeasureably from the competition and with muaxXx an eight-team field the monetary return should be much more attractive this year.
