Dear Doctor Allen:

I was happy to revé@ive your letter on the basketball
tournament and to note your interest in the event.

The question of transportation ‘and also hotels in this
war-jammed town) has been in my mind quite a bit as we started
feeling our way along on this year's tournament. However, I have
about decided to hold the field wo eight teams-- none from any
staggering distance--- which will cut down the travel requirements
considerably.

With the smaller field, it is vital that we have the,
best possible field--- and what would appeal more to Uklahoma Vity
fans than Oklahoma, Vklahoma “ggies and Sansas? The rest of the
field probably would come from the “outhwest conference, with perhaps
one service team entered.

The fans here have been used to morning, afternoon and
night sessions with 16 teams {we even had 18 year before last! but
I believe the reduction to eight_top notch teams would be even more
appealing and that Sooner-Aggie-! ayhawk rivalry should whet the
appetite of even the most discriminating fan.

: Basketball squads being comparatively small and the distance

criticized for travelling to a tournament where your boys could get
so much good experience in such a short time. The Santa ¥e's stream-
liner, which is an all-chair car train, would deliver you in here
on Sunday night before the tournament and back in Lawrence the following
Thursday afternoon, if you wanted to shave the time that closely.

The question of the navy's 48-hour rule comes up naturally.
With Uklahoma, it won't make any difference mw since they will be able
to get back mmmxma home each night, if need be. The only other coach
with whom I have had any correspondence on that rule, is Joe Davis of
Rice. He said that he had talked with a couple of his boys wnd that

they were anxious to give up part of their Christmas leave in d
