June 1, 19435. Dear Harry: One of my apparently good friends in Oklahoma City miled me a tear sheet from Hal Middlesworth's Daily Oklahoman. It appeared there about a couple of weeks ago. Miss Joy Miller, 2i22 Arkansas Ste, Wichita, Fansas. Dear Miss Willer: ‘\ they were goine to have competitive athletics for this year. They have determined that they will have a football team if the ODT o.k.'s it and I have pretty definite informtion that the ODT is insisting that we continue our competitive athletios. They will not promise too much transportation, ee ee thet the soldiers, sailors end marines « the men in service, want it badly. : “It is reported that the first inquiry thet comes from these men in foreign countries is regarding the standing of their achools in athletics. So as a morale builder they are asking the people here to carry on, not so moh for the morale of the pedple on the home i = eS ee Personally, I believe this is true because I have heard from many of the boys like Fen Durand in the Solomons, John Burge who is a naval flier in the Pacific, Frank Harwi in Australia, who never missed a basketball game, Bob Haggart who is shuttling back end forth ‘between the Pacific Coast and Hawaii, Clint Kanaga, a marine in the Solomons, and a great group of other athletes who have written me wanting to kmow how we came out in the basketball season. The reason, Miss Miller, Tt am giving you this information is in the hope that you can write your own story with this background of morale-building, so that our students here can see that when they compete for their school here they are raising the morale of the boys in foreign service. = Pee be @ good angle to present? | We. perhaps will have a basketball sehedule, but it a a a ee ee ‘Our intramural program will go forward under this iinet Unele Sam's crying need is to have more men physically fit : who are vital for the Army and Navy. Thirty-three and one-third per cent of our young men are being rejected on physical wifitness. There are two things that we will strese in intramurals -~ aquatics and combatives. Since basketball is placed om the number one list of ectivities for getting men into physical condition, we of course will stress basket- ball in intramrrals. And since this war carries our men over the soven seas it is necessary that they be proficient swimmers. It is to aid the war effort that we will primarily stress these activities. The four-point program is aquatics, gymmastics, combative activities, and sports and games. Since I have written a great deal on basketball, end since the University of Kansas was rather outstanding in that, you might want to use some of the space that you would not use for the schedule. How- ever, I do want you to lmow that I would be delighted to have a young man of your physical prowess and versatile capabilities in our department. Les, I doubt if we will have football next year, and if we do I believe the Athletic Board will ask a young man who is in our Depart- ment of Physical Education to take over. He is Henry Shenk, who played on the 1927, '28 and ‘29 varsity football team here and has been out in the state doing a fine job in his conching work. We called him back here three years ago and he is doing great work. Bill Hargiss wont into industrial work and Gwinn Henry resigned.
