Miller, one of the best. known political and | | business leaders of Kansas, died in a Topeka hospital tonight. He under- went a second operation at the hos- pital Monday and failed to rally. ‘Clyde Miller was born June 30, > 1875, at Osage City and grew up in Osage City and at Miller, the home point of the great Miller ranch in Lyon and Osage counties. The land _ holdings of the Miller family in the ranch properties were near 12,000 acres. The late Senator H. B. Miller and his brother, W. W. Miller, came ‘to Kansas in the early days of the state and purehased large acreages of land in the Elm creek and Marais des Cygnes river bottoms and adjoining pastures, : ea a : COUSIN OF WILL J. MILLER/ H. B. Miller was the father of Clyde Miller and W. W. Miller was the father of Will J. Miller, long associated with Clyde Miller in the ranch and insurance business. Will J. Miller now is state livestock sani- tary commissioner, — For many years the Miller brothers were the largest land owners, stock yaiser's, cattle feeders and taxpayers in Lyon and Osage counties. The ranch was situated at what was known as Condell’s Crossing of Elm ‘Creek in the days of the Santa Fe trail. When the Missouri Pacific built its Colorado line, it established the station of Miller at the ranch. Clyde Miller ‘attended the College of Emporia and was gaa of the law school of the. University: of Kansas but he did not engage ac- tively in the practice of law. He helped in the management of the ranch, then became interested in the “Insurance business with occasional participation in politics. _ ioe ON LIVESTOCK BOARD. He was a member of the board of |- directors of the Kansas Livestock association for many ‘years and served as mayor of Osage City be-. fore he came to Topeka and estab- lished his insurance companies. He- served as chairman of the Re- publican County committee in Osage County, as chairman of .the fourth district congressional committee and. for four years was secretary of the Republican state committee. He ran Congress in the fourth district in 1916 and was defeated. He was one of the original boosters for Landon for the 1936 presidential nomination. - For the last twenty-five years he had been the active head of a large insurance agency, and president of the Preferred Risk Fire Insurance company. He also was president of the old: Gosmopolitan Life Insurance : company. is ~ Clyde Miller married Miss Grace Colwell of Lawrence. They have four daughters, Mrs. Ned Fleming of Topeka; Mrs. Preston Alexander and Mrs. William W. Payne of Dallas and Mrs. J. K. Kline of Miller, Kas. ~ Funeral services will be Friday, —
