Z DIRECTOR C SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS November 30, 19358 Dr. Forrest Allen Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Fog: It was a surprise and a delight to receive your letter of November 235. Yes, it is true that Ed Hickox is going to retire, though I do not think he is very keen about it and I am sure that he is going to try to keep on coaching basketball during the season as much as possible for some time. His place here at the college will, I think, be taken by Maxwell who came in to help in con- nection with our physical work in the fall of 1937. He seems to be working in nicely, and is a very nice fellow. He is a Springfield graduate and worked in the high schools in the state of Massachusetts, I think, for sometime before coming here. During that time he built up quite a reputation as a football and a basketball coach. Paul Stagg, the son of Alonzo, is doing a fine work here, His first season was rather disastrous but this year he came through very nicely. Affleck is retiring this June, I believe. Goodness knows what he is going to do, but he has reached the age of 65 which, according to our new administration, is just too bad. Thanks for the congratulations. I liked that card very much and am, of course, keenly interested in the Far East situa~ tion. Thanks for your basketball schedule and luck to you. It looks like a humdinger. With very best wishes to yourself and to your family. This I believe will hold the thread allright. l am calling this to your attention,as I thought there was a possible chance of the thread breaking in some of the first 15 pair we sent you, in the case this has happened please have vour equipment manager return them and we will resew them. Allen Kansas University Lawerence, Kansas Dear Sir: The football season is over and I assure you that I have thought many times of the headaches and jitters the coaches have. I have enjoyed a very pleasant fall and have been just an ordinary spectator admir- ing the great American game. I was fortunate enough to see every team in the valley some time or other during the past season. I am sorry that each coach could not have champions. I still remember the praise when you win, but hell-double when you lose. I might say that as for me, I enjoy my new work very much. In the business school at Salina, we have an enrollment of about 330 and possibly will reach 400 in January. I am directing the school here in Salina. Our school in Kansas City, Kansas, under the direction of Nr. Brown, during the first year will reach 200 students. We feel certain that the enrollment in Kansas City, Kansas, will, within a year or two, surpass the one here in Salina. I really believe that the business school has a future. I am writing this letter primarily to let you know that this year has been very busy, however, I will always love football and basketball and next year I would like very much to officiate in both football and basketball. I hope that if you have the opportunity you will recommend me for officiating. I will not take time to give you my experience in athletics as you know it well. I will appreciate any good word you might say in my favor. This shows the left half ruming wide is a little to the left of the center of the field and there is a wide opening to the right, or when conditions are reversed the other side is usede The play is best when the offensive team is yeards right right end, leaving a ten yard space in theres Then when the shift is made, after the end goos over, the right half goes up a yard and ea half outside, near the half. back of the offensive right ende The other half is a yard and a half back and in, and the fullback is tw and a half yards back of the space between our center and left guard, and the quarter or the passer and rumer is four and a half yards back of centers This four and a half yard space kdeps the defensive team wonder= ing whether it is a plimge, rum or a pass. After the ball is passed the ball steps back half a yard or a yard to make his five yard legal passing area satisfactory.
