Z DIRECTOR C SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS November 30, 19358 Dr. Forrest Allen Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Fog: It was a surprise and a delight to receive your letter of November 235. Yes, it is true that Ed Hickox is going to retire, though I do not think he is very keen about it and I am sure that he is going to try to keep on coaching basketball during the season as much as possible for some time. His place here at the college will, I think, be taken by Maxwell who came in to help in con- nection with our physical work in the fall of 1937. He seems to be working in nicely, and is a very nice fellow. He is a Springfield graduate and worked in the high schools in the state of Massachusetts, I think, for sometime before coming here. During that time he built up quite a reputation as a football and a basketball coach. Paul Stagg, the son of Alonzo, is doing a fine work here, His first season was rather disastrous but this year he came through very nicely. Affleck is retiring this June, I believe. Goodness knows what he is going to do, but he has reached the age of 65 which, according to our new administration, is just too bad. Thanks for the congratulations. I liked that card very much and am, of course, keenly interested in the Far East situa~ tion. Thanks for your basketball schedule and luck to you. It looks like a humdinger. With very best wishes to yourself and to your family. Sincerely yours, FMM3R : af Wart hee
