Ss KN ND Dr. F.C.Allen, Varsity Basketball Coach, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, Dear 'Phog's: I was afraid that the sample stocking I sent you would be too bulky. Your idea sounds very good, so we are making up a pair for you according to your specifications, This durene jersey ribbing that we use for the stirrup is very light when used single, in fact too light to use as a cuff, so we will use it double and on one stocking will put the elastick on the outside and on the other insert it in them tubing. If it is put on the inside there is a chance that it will catch the leg hairs and be uncomfortable. Will try to get tiitse samples mailed out by the 19th, At this time of the year we are exceptionally busy with basketball clothing, as every outfit is different in every detail. We are making two outfits for your old star Adolph Rupp, he has followea@ your example in dressing up his team in classy style. I have talked to Dana Morrison, President of Bauer and Black Co. about the sweat sock that you were telling me about. Dana says that they made this several years ago , out the Sporting Goods Distributors discouraged him in the idea by not selling or making an effort to sell the stocking, so he discontinued making them. If you can use at least 6 dozen of them he will make them up for you and endeavor to again market them, He has lft it up to me to determine the market for them, which I will endeavor to do. Dear "Phog"™: It is at least some consolation to learn that we had the stocking corrett in every detail except the top. While we know exactly what you have in mind, the idea cannot be incorporated in an athletic stocking as it takes special knitting machinery to handle the lastex yarn. These are all fine gauge machines, adaptable only for the manufacture of dress hose. The best that we or any other athleticclothing manufacturer can do is to knit the cuff part as tightly as possible, but this will not support the stocking after a certain amount of use and cleaning. For your inspection and approval I am sending you a regular stocking on which the top has been turned and in the tunnel 1$" woven elastic inserted. This iS7as used in mens shorts. This elastic has a very light tension. I am also sending you two other types of elastic, 1" in width, each having a different tension. This type of support, I believe, is the most practical that I can think of. While the stocking I am sending you is not the correct length or stitch, at the same time it will give you an idea of what I have in mind. Your stockings we would finish the same length as the sample submitted after turned. The turned portion could be turned to the inside, if you so desire. This elastic can easily be replaced, You really have an excellent idea on the lastex knitted cuff and I hope we can work something out along that line by next season, however, at this time it is too late to carry on any research work and do experimenting. It would be a pleasure to give you full credit for sueh-an idea, but we would be unable to cash in on the value of your name due to the fact that the idea eannot be copyrighted, and as soon as we came out with it every other manufacturer would copy it. It is quite true that most of the intelligence as to styles, patterns, etc. do come from coaches, and this 136 entirely due to the fact that they are in constant y contact with the users and have a greater opportunity STYLE — QUALITY — SERVICE to observe the equipment in action than the manufacturers. I can assure you that we can turn the stockings out for you within four or five days from receipt of the order. At this time of the year, this is not our regular service, but in your ease, it will be done. Again thanking you for the consideration given our line and assuring you that we wish to co-operate with you in every respect, we are Yours very truly, SAND KNITTING MILLS CO. Dr, FeCcAlien, Varsity Basketball Coach, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, bear "Phog"s A special rush put on your basketball stockings and the factory was able to get 15 pair out to you special delivery friday. I hope you received them in time, and were able to get along with the quanity that we were able to get out. I heard saturday that you were holding a clinic at Warrensburg, and in these clinics I know that youmuse quite a few plavers, so I fear that you were unable to use only 15 pair. The balance of the stockings will be shipped to-day. I have been in contact with a firm that weaves quite a bit of dastex yarn, and we are going to try to work out some mans of using the lastex in a cuff for basketball hose. The only drawback that I see now is that the price may seem beyond reason. Recently I had a talk with Dana Morrison, President of Bike-Webb Co., he told me that he had given R.eSeHlliott the complete information on the woven ela tic foot in sweat socks. Im presume tey have talked with you about the matter. Dear Phog: ; Your telegram received yesterday and the order immediately put in work, and if there is a possible chance, we will get the stockings out to you by the specified time. At this time of the year you appreciate the fact that the factory is head over heels in work trying to get out basketball uniforms for those teams that were not in position to order until the end of the football season. We understand fully your instructions and you can depend upon us to make the hose exactly according to your specifications. If it is humanely possible, we will make shipment so you will have the hose in your possession by Saturday. 7 Again thanking you for this business, I am ; Sincerely yours, on [Wainy © Tope PEELE STYLE — QUALITY — SERVICE ys \ é , Th a Z i i ae ‘i dt ity ti alten bits Gita ae ne Ps nite ‘i H vel af aittat if Et aon i a e ee ee te aN i is : eres sess ili Ha a 11h, is ih ri HR Ht Hie ts ce 583% Besa i a38 i. dua vit ut ‘ Vy i is Tine He He if Tah ite a is ih | ie ile ait if TH eB ih! ee loa 4 a i AF gesé 1 ie His a8 i He ate ed bj et if ie at Hiei: Est igi | cat i <3 e Pil i He Ae site yi Me its sii wy Mi Hapiti il] a i ‘erat ti lates ti ft Hee ‘Rap is 3: a ii st gui i Sliac sprain ani a subluxated thing te eve corrected. sure that Dre A g : tag? ‘gs gs 2 Maly tit | ish *y ity Hi rebound is or % blame any of 1 na at oh esi eh rn, 3 Very sinwerely yours, Diveetor of Phystoal Eduseation, — Varsity Basketball Coach. | - POASAR July 11, 1938 Drs F. Ce Aiien University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phog, The main reason for this letter is Betty Jeanne. She has decided that she would like to come to K. U. Naturally she would have to have work, so I was won- dering just what you could do for her.. I would certainly appreciate it if you would let me know about the situation as soon as possibdie. ‘Let me, . .. know how much she can make and still carry 4 good’ course of study. She is a very good student and won't have trouble scholastically. You know what will be necessary as well = I am in very fine condition as yet. My back is bothering me an awfully lot but that is all. I weigh 173 now and am just about as tough as I can bee I hope to be ready to give them everything this next year. I know that I was a washout to almost everyone last year. At least I did not live up t o expectations. I regret that an awful lot. My look- out has changed and I will try much harder this year. If I get out of line or anything I surely want you to knock me back in the groove. I may have to come to see you about my back. I am having Dr. Cartwright look at it today. He should be able to take care of it. Would appreciate it if you would answer this letter at your earliest convenience. Remember me to Bob and all the family.
