Dear Dr. Allen:

In this morning's New York Times appears the schedule for the coming
season down in Madison Square Garden and I note with pleasure that
you are booked to play here December 28. That is a fine break for me
for the very good reason that my son Kevin will be on vacation and

it will be an excellent opportunity for the both of us to get down
and take in the game. .

This is something I have looked ahead to for a great many years. I
think you know that. It was just about one month ago that 1 was out
in St. Louis and had three or four days to myself. lt was quite a
temptation to go out thereto Lawrence and 1 think I would were it for
the fact that something came up at the last moment which, although not
of paramount importance, was nevertheless of such a nature that Il
thought it better to remain. In this instance, we will of a dead
certainty be on hand and I hope that I will be able to locate you

just for the purpose of saying a hello.

Kevin is now 16, and will be 17 next March. He is 6 <t. 1 im. in
height, and weighs 158 pounds. He is not much at baseball but he is
one of the best prospects I have ever seen in basketball. He has a
beautiful shot, and while he is a trifle slow on his feet, he is fast
enough. When I told him today that I would take him down, he was all
excited and 1 hope very much imeed that we will have a chance to get in
to see you, personally, since 1 want Kevin to meet you.

Perhaps it is a father's pride in 4 son, but I think he is pretty good.

We have already, and he is only in his senior year, been offered a
scholarship but we are in no hurry to take it since he is not only
proficient in basketball but, what is more to the point, he is well

up in his studies. In his last solid geometry examination, he received

a mark of 100. He very rarely falls below 85 and, consequently, neither
of us are worrying as to just what he will do next year but, nevertheless
and notwithstanding, 1 hope very much that you can arrange to at least

say hello to him. That would please him greatly and would be a big event
in his life. You see, when we grow older we do not give ourselves credit
which is rightfully ours but these young fellows, kids of high school age,
look up to you fellows and when the opportunity presents itself, they will
go to any extreme to see one of these big fellows, meet them. etc. L think
that I can say these things to you without, at the same time, lea@ing you
to believe that I am resorting to anything but a sincere statement of facts.

I hope that everything is well in the Allen household. The last time
I heard from you, “ilton was down around Sentucky, I think. Is he
still with that oil concern and has his family increased any? Tell
him to have boys and to equip them with a basketball at a ripe, early

perienced, so I am not looking for as great a year as we had hoped for at
the finish of last season's campaigns

 
With ford in there and with Corbin back, plus the other boys he
has from Illinois, Bruce should have a great outfit. I appreciate Harold |
Keith's confidence in my ability, but I am afraid he is picking on a dead
horse this times Sobby and Englemn are all right, but none of the boys
are big and they are not experienced enough to spell the doom of Mre Ford

Ordinarily we don t correspond until the basket-
ball season starts, but yqu told me to wait two years and
see if your friend wouldn t be at the top of the pile in
the Big Six. I think you were highly offended because I
told you he probably would never win a Big Six game.

Since we are well into the second season, | think
it-is well that two old friends who love one another as you
-and I should view the situation and see who is on the right
track,

I don't enjoy this opportunity to pour it on you
but darn your soul, I hope you can see the thing the way }
do at last. Our case certainly looks hopeless and ! am not
one easily discouraged.

I presume you are working your boys regularly.
Our Mr, Drake certainly has some salty sophomore material,
but “arold Keith says it wivldn t make my difference if
they were seniors that he would still take you.

if it rains in the next two weeks, + plan to come
up for the homecoming game--not so much to see the football
but to just see how well the dear old Kansans stand up
under the strain of thinking a mug like Gwin Henry could
coach football.

I'm ashamed of myself for not writing to you sooner than this.

But I have been pretty busy here since I first arrived in this sun-=
ny (77) clime, and have just been putting off writing to you. My
conscience finally prodded me so much that 1 thought I had better
write you or I would never get any rest. But I can assure you that
I had good.intentions 'Doc', and TI will write more regularly in the
future.

Of course, by now, you have reasoned out that I accepted the assist-
ant-ship here at U. C. Le Ae I have been here since August 27th,
and I certainly am in love with the place. This is wonderful coun-
try out here,

The Physical Education Department here surely is a keen lay-out.

The school has plenty of money and the Phys. Ed. dept. has certain-

ly received their share. The men and women have separate buildings

and they face each other across 4 huge expanse of the greenest lawn

I have ever seen. But then all of the lawns here are perfect. They
all have the hidden sprinkler system, and they sure use the water in
an effort to keep the grass looking nice--and they succeed.

The Phys. Ed. buildings are both huge affairs. Each one has a large
swimming pool attached ( which measures 100' X 60! and having two
one-meter adjustable diving boards and one three-meter adjustable
board. The pools are finished in green tile and they are both out-
door, being surrounded by a high wall. The mens pool is where the
polo matches and swimming meets are held, and consequently they have
a lerge bleacher section erected next to the pool walk.

And 'Doc! you should see this gym here} It is really something.

The faoor is one of those 'soft' king--it feels like you're playing
on firm velvet, if you can imagine such a thing. I can't understand
why they don't turn out champion-ship teams all the time. Wilbur
Johns is the basket-ball coach here. And of course you know that
Bill Spaulding is Director of Athletics.

I am teaching two classes in swimming, one in basket-ball and one in
track and field. These boys are surely getting a thorough going-over
sn fundementals. I think I will even allow some of the boys from

Use Se Ce come over and audit the course!

Well, 'Doc', I'm afraid I will have to quit for now, but I promise (or
threaten!) to write to you more frequently in the future. Please let
me hear from you--whenever you can find a spare moment, which is real-
ly rare for you, I know.

would be a cince for Kansas in basketball this year, and Horace was dunb
to collaborate with him in Bob Busby's columm, saying that it was just another

Corbing Scheffler, an all-state Illinois star from Springfields and another one
‘that I know of, and Bruce Drake has confidentially stated that he will have a
better ball team this year than he had last.

I do not believe it but I would like the information that you can give
me at an early date so that Mr. Drake cannot hand me the championship upon a
platter. I want to hand it back to him with a perusal of his personnels

We are all very unhappy that divers events
and circumstances will necessitate cancellation of our
plans to come to Lawrence forthe none etre Affair.

I had accepted the ‘chairmanship of the committee
in “charge of the budget drive at dear old Filgrim Congregational
Church and since they have not made quota for four years, i
thought + would stay on the job and see if we couldn't stamp
out the defeatist attitude in the =

Then, last summer I Yad the happy thought that
the Cklahoma City printing industry should hold some kind
of an event to commemorate the Five Hundredth Anniversary
of printing. Werwerergiven a Chambér of Commerce forum date
and this would be the date.

We have had a lot of work to do to build up this
grand ccélebration so vital to-our industry. Then we need a
sales meeting in our own organization badly during. the middle
of several special selling campaigns and Tom's home games
have been so frequent that we have postponed such a sales
conference to an open date.

All in all, I don't see how | had the nerve to
conceive the possibility of getting away this weekend. But
my heart is heavy over the prospects of missing my old friends,

Dorothy and Cobby join me in express ing our dis-
appointment in not getting to see you and “rs. Allen this
weekend, but we will make it eventually and maybe the skies

stand up in unison for the Crimson and Blue (the old man
is really loosening up in sentiment isn't he?).

You certainly are to be envied in the great
game which you saw last week, It was pretty tough on our
old friend, Pappy Warldorf, but I aot think he needs to
bow his head in shame when his kids do that well.

I will give you full information on the two
clubs you asked about at a later date. My information is
rather fragmentary at the moment and I can't give you too
much on A. & M, You can count on me for that later.

We all hope you have a glorious home-coming, a

that they are continuing in their happy quest of success in lifes.
We have been especially blessed by having all of our children home for
the Demosratio Thanksgiving on the 2lste Mary, one of the daughters,
with her three children and husband are staying over and will be with
us for the Repyblican Thanksgiving tomorrow. We will see the game with
_ Colorado State. Milton is married and has one daughter, He is living
with his femily at 831 Louisiana, in the same block with use Milton
finished in 1936 in the School of Business and now he is taking & law
course and will finish it a year from this summer. He has been doing
very well indeed with the Standard 011 Ccmpany and has a leave until
he graduates, so we hope he Contiauee his success which he has atteinod
with them, : :

Bobby, in his senior year, is playing on the Varsity and has
established a very fing academic records He is just 1/10 of 1% below
the Phi Beta Kappa requirement. He plans to take his A Bs here and has
made application at Harvard and Mimesota for his medical works I wanted
him to go to the University Medical College in Rosedale, but he desires to
get further away from honeo He says he has been too close to finish his
next four years here and he wants to get out on his own responsibility, which
~ had & good thinge ;

, Fleanor, our youngest, ‘te a soshenare in the University. Jane
finished at ansas and finished another degree at Stanford, and then was.

= with Ritehey Cooper, editor of the Saturday Evening Post, and now she

is in Chicago with the American Arts Institute, All of our children
were home with the four grandchildren and we had quite a lively times

I could not ask for anything. better when I sce as much gattering

Dear Doctor Allen:

The foot—ball season is nearing its close and that natural-
ly brings up the question of basket-ball. Late last Winter or
early Spring I saw an announcement in one of the New York papers
that Kansas would play a basket—ball game at Madison Square Gar-
den during the latter part of December. Of course, you know, I
expect to be present when that game is played.

However, my purpose in writing you is to invite you if
possible, to pay us a visit in Nassau County. I have recently
been named as President-elect of the Kiwanis Club off Hempstead
and will take office at the first meeting in January. I am
wondering however, if when you come east with the team, you
would arrive as early as Thursday of that week and if so, if it
would be possible for you to address our Kiwanis Club at its
noon meeting on Thursday. The Club meets at Hempstead, which
is about 2 and one-half miles from Mineola, and either point is
only 40 minutes by Long Island Railroad train from the Pennsylvania
Station in Manhattan: I know that when you do arrive in New York
that you will have a very busy schedule but I am hoping that there
might be an opportunity of having you pay us a visit.

Also, in addition to speaking at our Club, I would like to
show you our department which is now housed in the new Court House
as well as some of the natural beauties of Nassau County. Work
is going along nicely and we have a full time personnel of more
than 70 people. According to the 1940 census, our population is
408,000 and in reality Nassau County may be considered a city by
itself. :

So far have only seen three foot-ball games this year and
all of them pro. Last year I saw most of the games played,
that is, pro. games by the Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers but Mrs.
Dr. Forrest C. Allen -2- November 25th, 1940.

Brown has been seriously ill dnd since Sunday is about the only
day I really have at home I have almost given up foot—ball for
this year.
