Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear-Dr. Allen: I have a copy of your letter to Mr. Hyland dated October 30 and am answering it in his absence, even though he will return later today. Concerning the size of type, it is true we had at first thought 11 point would be best but then we didn't know the size of the manuscript. However, this really mekes little difference for the difference in size between 11 point and 10 point is really negligible and it will make the book somewhat smaller, as explained by Mr. Hyland. Even with 10 point it is going to run around 500 pages including front matter and there is such a thing as having a book too bulky and heavy. We would, of course, have used 11 point if it had been a smaller manuscript and while we probably should have told ~~ of the change, it was overlooked, There is no guestion as to the price of the book. It is to be $4.00, which was settled long ago. As I told you at that time, the $3.00 price was set tentatively because we did not know the size of the manuscript but that is now over the dam. Regarding the sub-title, we had planned to use it in every place except on the jacket but if you prefer it on the jacket, we will include it there as well although we are not sure it will look as well. While we may not look at it as a sub-title, that is what it really is and it will really make no difference one way or the other, so it will be used as you request. Sincerely yours, ae CWM : MK . TRADE DEPARTMENT SECRETARY & ASST. TREASURER November 4, 19387. Dr. Forrest C. Allen Division of Physical Fducation University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas | BETTER BASKETBALL Dear Dr... Allen: This is a somewhat belated acknowledgment of your letter of October 20th but I know from Mr. McGraw thet he has already made a reply since you also sent him a copy of this letter. Consequently, there is very little more that I can say, although I do want to make a few remarks in the hope that I may clear up all questions involved. First of all you will probably have received before the arrival of this letter, the last installment of page proofs, and will have noted that there are a total of 482 text pages to which must of course be ad- ded the preliminary pages or "front matter" as these preliminary pages are properly termed, and the index. The frontispiece will of course be ineluded among the front matter pages and proofs of these pages will go forward to you as soon as we have final copy for the table of contents with the book page numbers inserted to replace the manuscript page numbers. Miss Gile I know is at work on the copy for the front matter, and we have already prepared a cut for the frontispiece and two cuts of your signature, one of which we plan to place beneath your picture, and the other at the end of the statement. I feel sure that you will send us the copy for the index as soon as possible after you have completed the proofreading and returned the marked set of page proofs to us for final correction. I might say at this time that I am anxiously awaiting the return of all corrected pages because I am very much interested in your reactions to the arrangement of text and illustrations. I looked over all of the duplicate page proofs as they reached us from the printer and was of the impression that the printer had done a good job TO Mc GraAw-HILL Book COMPANY: ING. Dr. Allen PAGE two DATE 11 -4-37 with a difficult proposition. Of course there are a few places where all of the corresponding text does not face the related exhibit or diagram, but I am sure that you recognize these limitations. There are also a few other places where, in my opinion, this arrange- ment might be improved, but I feel that the improve- ment, if it could be affected, would be very slight indeed. I have just seen your suggestions regarding the suggested rearrangement of pages 181-184 inelusive but we cannot answer your comments definitely until the manuscript is returned to us from the printer. I can- not account for some of this text being out of order, and it is unfortunate that you did not note this during the examination of the galley proofs. When returning the corrected galleys to the printer for page makeup, we did note that the exhibits were referred to out of proper numerical sequence and made one change, but did not suspect that the text was not in proper order since we felt that you would have called this to our attention. However, just as soon as the manuscript is returned we will rearrange these pages and submit second proofs for your approval. In so far as is concerned the jacket, Mr. McGraw has advised you that the subordinate or "explanatory" title "Technique, Tactics and Tails" will appear on the jacket, and also on the cover of the binding as well as on the title page itself. I believe that it will be well to include this explanatory title beneath the master title on the half title page that precedes the main title. Just so that there may be no misunderstanding, however, we do not intend to include the word "Incor- porating™ because we feel that its use is superluous. Since Mr. McGraw has already advised you that the selling price of the book is to be $4.00 rather than $3.00 as you suspected, I can only say that the use of 10 point type, rather than 11 point shown in the original samples was decided upon here, and I might add that we did not consider it necessary to mention this to you because we feel that the use of this slightly smaller type was necessary and we knew that it could not affect the readability of the text. Please bear in mind TO McGraw-HILt Book Company-INc. Dr. Allen pace three 7 pate 11=4-37 Dr. Allen that we’ are just as much interested in the physical appearance of our books as any of our authors, in fact I think that we are much more interested be- cause in so far as this is concerned, we have a repu- tation to uphold. If we felt that 10 point type was too small to be easily read, we certainly would not have decided upon it. It is of course true that the actual total of 482 text pages is slightly less than my estimate, but it must be kept in mind that it was not only difficult but practically impossible to make a much more accurate estimate of the space that would be required by the illustrations and their legends. I feel quite confident that after the work has been completed you will agree that you will have nothing to be ashemed of in so far as is concerned the physical appearance of this book. I am sure that you are going to agree that its physical appearance does justice to what is between thé covers. Very ly yours, - 7 JAH: LOC Prodwetion Department. November 9, 1937s Ur. The numerous holidays, to say nothing of Saturdays and Sundays, makes November an extremely short month in so far as is concerned actual working days.
