Have now definitely received an appointment as Lieutenant (J.G.) imthe Naval Reserve. Bon't know yet to what indocrination school I will be sent. I do want to say that I'm sure that your letter was a great help to me. The Navy man in Montana who helped me with my application said that your letter was the best out of over 500 similar ones he had seen--in that it completely covered every qualification that the Navy wanted to find out about. When I took my application to Seattle, my first inter- view happened to be witha Navy officer who in the 1920's had taught school and coached in several small Kansas towns. He was not a K.U. graduate but was notéceably impressed when he saw your signature. Thanks again, Doc, for your help. Sincerely, Hews 218 terbenoe Mey 31, 1943. ' fo begin with, we are planning to have football at the present ‘time, and the Chencellor wants football. Of sourse, we may have to wait end see just what the situation will be on our campus later in the summer as regards players and so forth. At present we have four letter- men on the campus: Kenneth Adams, quarterback, Card Hird, guard, Don | Johnson, tackle, and Jumius Penny, center. In addition, we have these me from last year's freshman numeral winners: Robert Tomlinson, guard, Kemy White, halfback, Dale Bush, halfback, Charles Keller, guard and tackle, Fred 'Numphrey, halfback, Bill Jameson, tackie, Warren Riegle, end, Thomas Warren, halfback, Joe Gray, end, Frank Pattee, halfback, Howard Bowman, halfback, and C. D. Williams, guard and tackle. ‘Some or all of these boys may be gone by next fall. \ The following lettermen were lost through graduation: Harlan Altman, quarterback, Bob Githens, center, Paul Hardman, end, Grant Hunter, Ed Linguist, and Forrest Wilson. ; : We lost the following lettermen from last year's squad to the armed services, and also a number of squad men: Hoyt Baker, a Charles Black, end, Dick Channel, tackle, John Conley, fullback, Joe Crawford, guard, George Dick, end, Ray Evans, End, Bill Ferguson, tackle, John Herron, halfback, Warren Hodges, tackle, Gene Long, guard, John Monroe, tackle, Lewis Musick, guard, Bill Palmer, halfback, Bernard Passnen, end, Gene Roberts, halfback, Joe Roberts, fullback, Otto Sehnellbacher, end, Walt Sheridan, center, Gene Sherwood, fullback, Lloyd Svoboda, guard, Peal Turner, end, Grier Zimmerman, guard. In addition, we are expecting a number of boys in We had no spring practice, as you probably know. It seems to me that the important thing about football next fall will be the question as to whether the cometition will be even. For your information under the new set-up that recently went into effect, instead of an A~10 priority. I think that you folks would be entitled to a priority of AAOX. Better look into this beeause it is a much better priority rating than an A-10 would be and it should help to get your towels to you that much sooner. Of course, there is one priority higher, and that is AA-1, which we have an awful lot of at the present time. I was very glad to meet you in Kansas City, Mr. Allen. Thanks very much fom your prompt action on the matter. We have quoted these towels to the State at $6.35 per dozen, FOB Mill. We can make good deliveries. When I phoned you I forgot to ask just hww soon you needed the towels. When it comes to deliveries, priority ratings enter the picture in a large way. Let us say that you have an A-10 on your order. We have it on the looms. Along comes an order with a rating of AA-1, used by all schools now that have army or navy contracts for the training of military personell. We MUST take off your order and apply the looms to the AA~1 goods. Hence you see why we want to help you get the best rating available. Without a doubt you have a representative of the army or navy on the campus, handling the program of training the personell. Approach him, and he may be able to give ' you’ some valuable advice. We do not know the proceedure of getting the AA-l rating, but other schools can hélp youon this matter. My best personal regards , Mr Allen.
