38 The double elimination tournament is recommended for this activity. If there is more than one school in the community, the individual school winners can come together in an elimination tournament to decide a city champion. KITES Kite making and flying is an activity that appeals to boys of the elementary grades as well as to those in junior and senior high schools. No expense is Ces volved, facilities for kite flying are no object, and the activity usually is enthusiastically received both by the students and the public. - The activity is adaptable to any point system but it is suggested that credit be given also for the different types of kites, their construction, size, ability to stay aloft, and the distance a kite may be "let-out". Model airplanes may also be included with kites and points given craftsman- ship, and ability to stay aloft. MARBLES Marbles is a sport that appeals to boys of the elementary level on up through high school. It requires no financing and very little playground space. It is also a sport which will bring much publicity to the intramural depart— ment if held as a city championship. A tournament -- double elimination recommended —- can be held in each school after which the individual school champions may meet for the city championship. With the support of the local newspaper, the townsfolk will undoubtedly turn out to see the event which should boost the intramural department and create much interest among the participants. The type of game will depend largely upon the community. The circle game is recommended. ROLLER SKATING Much impetus has been given to this activity during the past few years by the commercialized rinks set up over the country. It has much appeal to the children of the elementary grades but junior and senior high school students also participate in it. The lack of facilities offers the greatest obstacle to roller skating as an intramural sport. However, it should be encouraged by a point system, non- competitive in nature. Many schools award points for a certain number of hours of skating. | This plan is satisfactory since it includes roller skating in the program, and, at the same time requires no facilities as the skating is done on the sidewalks. SOFT BALL Softball is one of the most popular team activities on the spring intra- mural program and therefore deserves much consideration. It is a good sport for both boys and girls of the upper elementary grades, high schools, colleges, and universities. | , As interest in softball is great, a large number of teams will enter. Dif- ferent leagues should be organized with an elimination tournament of the league winners at the completion of a round robin schedule.
