28 HORSESHOES This activity is fully discussed with spring activities. HORSEBACK RIDING Horseback Riding is limited to the favored few who can afford it. Riding may be done by most age groups of either sex. It is probably best for older groups but has a place in some high schools. It should be conducted as a non- competitive sport and could be encouraged by a point system. SIX-MAN FOOTBALL This game should never be played without proper protective equipment. The shoes worn are cheaper than regular football shoes but otherwise the same good grade of equipment used for eleven man football is necessary. Six-man football is a good game but requires close supervision to prevent injuries. It isa strenuous game and training in fundamentals is essential as is conditioning of the participating boys. It probably should not be played by boys younger than the regular high school age. Points can be given for practice periods to en- courage proper preparation for the contests. The chief drawback to Intramural use of this up-and-coming sport lies in the cost of playing equipment. SOCCER Soccer is an excellent activity and may be modified for use even in the elementary schools where line soccer, circle soccer, and rotation soccer are play- ed. This game is unquestionably a fall game which may be played on into cold weather if the field is clear of ice and snow. It is not expensive; a ball and space are the main essentials. Some districts of this country do not have soccer traditions and for that reason it is hard to promote this sport. The game is usually played by boys but can be played readily by girls. Some practice in techniques of ball handling and team play is necessary and points given for practice will lead to a better turnout. Good officials are necessary to keep roughness to aminimum. At Central State Teachers, Warrensburg, Missouri, this game has been used satisfactorily on the football field after the football season. SPEEDBALL Speedball is an activity that is popular because it includes some of the skills used in soccer and basketball. It is adaptable to junior and senior high schools as well as colleges and universities. Because of the size of the official field, which is 260 feet by 140 feet, some schools may feel that it is impossible to include speedball in their intramural activities. In such cases it is suggested that the size of the field be reduced to meet the needs of the individual school, and that a basketball be used in place of the official speedball. The basketball cannot be thrown or kicked as far as a speedball and this tends to offset the shortened playing field. One objection to speedball is that it is camplicated by a great number of rules. It is adaptable to any point system and a round robin tournament is sug- gested as the type of contest to use.
