Alien Chairman Fifth District Basketball Tournament Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Dear "Doe:" in spite of your kindness and your assurame that expenses would be cared for to Oklahoma City, I find that I will be unable to attend the tournament on Monday as I am going to have to be away for a basketball schedule meet- ing in Appleton, Wis. on Sunday. As that is so far in the opposite direction from Oklahoma City, it would be imposs- ible to get to Oklahoma City for Monday and it might be ridiculous to try to make it for just one day. Much as I regret it, I believe I had better not try to make it for such a short time. I am enclosing an itemized list of the expenses I tave been put to so far and shall appreciate a check when funds are available. I think you have done a fine job in straightening out the tangles which have arisen since our meeting in Kansas City. I am surprised that the Aggies and Oklahoma would have Jack North. If I had thought they wold accept him, I would have sugzested him in the first place. I hope this tournament goes off smoothly and I hope that Ed Lytton will be able to get to San Francisco, so that he will not bé too terribly disappointed. Cordially yours, John C. Dean John Bunn, Stanford University, Stanford University, California. Dear Dean Bunn:- My delay in answering your letter is occasioned by the fact that I had difficulty in getting in touch with the Chairman of the Basketball Committee for the Seventh District, and so the various correspondence had to be forwarded to me. I don't know whether I can do any good at this late date, but I am enclosing a copy of the letter I am sending today to Harry Carlson who is, as you may know, Director of Athletics at the University of Colorado. I agree with you that it is quite important if a National Tournament is to be held that the out- standing team in each District be chosen. As a matter of fact, I am very much interested in this whole matter at the present time and since the Executive Committee of the N.C.A.A., of which I happen to be a member this year, is meeting in Chicago on Saturday I imagine there will be a pretty full discussion of the whole thing. I wonder if it would be too much trouble for you, on receipt of this letter, to wire me at the Hotel Stevens in Chicago, where I shall arrive on Friday, telling me what team has been finally picked from the Seventh District, and whether it has accepted. I appreciate thoroughly the amount of difficulty the arrangement of such a Tournament involves and I stand ready to be helpful wherever possible. Sincerely yours, Serer ttonn Rene, Thurston J. Davies Wire sent March ll. Utah State xt So, be invitation to represent %th District. Sickness prevented Colorado team from entering agRSpament. Thank you for your hearty cooperation. John Bunn March 8, 1939. Dean Henry Carlson, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colerade, oar —" | ing a copy of 4 ‘Letter 1 received — tan Dean Bunn of bata under date of February 23rd. Since I did not know what the status of affairs was in the Seventh District I asked Dr. Gilmore, as President of the Reeky Mountain Conference, to write Dutch Witte to see just what the situation was. I have just received a copy of his reply and in it he states that the University of Colorado would probably be invited to participate in the Tournament. This I think is apprepriate under tke method of selection of teams as it has been worked out this year, but I do not like the method, and I think we will’ heve a discussion of the whole matter at @ meeting of the Executive Committee of me WeCeAsAe this coming Saturday. You know, of course, that I have no desire nor inelinat tion even to suggest to the athletic authorities at the University of Colorado what they should do in. & na btor guch as this, I do feel, how« ever, it is i + if the Netional Collegiate is to sponsor a championship that the most represen+« tative teams compete, I think this Tournament will become, if properly handled, an a event nationally a you know how strong a believer I am in the necessity for a national organization, such as the N,CsAsAs to run : championship events if we concede at ail the necessity for their being ruts in that regard I have always felt, as you know, that. Basketball is the one spott which’ is being played on such a high level in the Rocky Kountain region that from time to time teams eae institutions in the region will be —ee ao N&étional Basketball Tournament, and I don?t think this true probably of any other’ sat ~ Page 2 This is a rather rambling letter but I know you Will understand what I am trying to say. Owens, president of the N.C,A.A., has suggested that I write to you concerning the western play-off of the N.C.A.A. which will be held on Tressure Island March 20 and él. The advance information which I have re- eeived from the chairman of the tournament committee in your district indicates that in all probability the University of Colorade will be chosen. Press dis- patches which I have received concerning the play-off are to the effect that the University of Colorado has been invited to participate in an invitation tourna- ment in New York City. Naturally one cannot depend upon press Gispatches in this instance. However, I shall appre- ciate your co-operation in bringing to the attention of the officials of the University of Colorado (in the event that their team is chosen for the western play-off) the advisdbility of taking part in this N.C.A.A. event.
