HICKOX, SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE SECRETARY-TREASURER February 5, 1940 Dr. Forrest C. Allen c/o The University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: This will acknowledge the receipt of your recent communication. I would like to take up the two questions which you present to me in their order, and although I am not in a position at this time to give you a definite asnwer to the first question, I want to assure you that I shall do everything within my power to follow the suggestion you have made with reference to this question. I heartily agree with you that the National Association of Basketball Coaches should do something to assist in the liquidation of the indebtedness for the promotion of the N.C.A.A. tournament of last year. I have talked with Mr. Olsen about suggesting to our board that we take one dollar from our treasury for each active member who attends the convention or charge off from our treasury one dollar for each ticket given to coaches that attend the final play-off game. I think possibly the first suggestion would be better as that would insure us of more money. I intend to put both of the above propositions up to our board at once. Do you think I should attempt to get a vote by mail from them before our annual meeting which will be held in Kansas City on Thursday evening, March 28, at 6:30 o'clock? If I were to get an early answer, this would probably assist the N.C.A.A. Tourna- ment Committee to make more definite plans. that do you think? In answer to your second question, I certainly agree with you that Mr. Liston and Company should not use the name of Naismith on the trophy which is to be awarded at their so-called "Intercollegiate Championship Tourna- ment." This is in no way a national championship to me. As far as my knowledge permits I have not known of a really outstanding team in the country that has attended any of their tournaments. I hope that something can be done through the Naismith family to withdraw their permission B. T. GROVER, OHIO UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT THE NATIONAL AssoG DR. JAMES A. I also agree with you wholeheartedly in the proposition that a suitable trophy with the name of Naismith on it should be purchased by the N.B.C.A. and awarded annually to the winner of the N.C.A.A. tournament. I shall take this up immediately with our board and leave it in the Tournament Committee's hand to purchase a suitable award. To permit Liston and Company to use the good name of Doctor Naismith is nothing short of preposterous to me. I am sure that you express the wish of Doctor Naismith in quoting him as having told you he intended to withdraw his trophy from this so-called Intercollegiate Tournament. I hope that steps are taken by you and the Naismith family to see that this is done. If you will let me know what you think I should try to do on securing financial assistance from our treasury, I shall immediately put the proposition to our board. I feel very keenly the fact that our association should do something in a financial way to assist this tournament. A dollar from each active membership, I am sure would not be too large an amount to give. I shall be pleased to hear from you immediately. Very sincerely yours N.AB. Cc. You should know the men from your immediate section who would do us a good job on such an occasion. I am sure you know what we would like to have and certainly there are men in that section who could handle such an assign- ment well. As a suggestion along this line, I would like to see a man who knows both the coaching side and also the academic side of a university, some one who might discuss the tenure of the coaching profession, the import- ance of a close association of our athletic coaches with the faculty of their respective colleges and universities, and related matters. In other words, looking to the future, which I am sure is to come shortly, the coaches as members of the faculty with faculty ranking, somewhat with insurance on their jobs. I am certain that many of the coaches are inter- ested in this important movement today and some one who is able to discuss it, would, I believe, be well received at our banquet. HICKOX, SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE SECRETARY-TREASURER February 24, 1940 Dr. Forrest C. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doctor Allen: Pardon my delay in answering your recent letter concerning the advisability of the charge to the Coaches Association for the final N.C.A.A. championship game and also the matter of an award from the National Coaches Association to the winner of the final game at Kansas City. This delay, however, has been due to the neces~ sity of having to write to our board of directors and officers and to await their answers. I am glad, however, to be able to give you the vote of our board and officers. They are just about unanimously in favor of the charge of $1.00 per ticket to be made to the coaches and to be paid by them rather than taking the amount from our treasury. They have all expressed themselves as being willing to pay and feel that the tournament committee has been most considerate in giving the coaches group a reduced price of $1.00 for the final game. I would suggest that the Olympic Committee operate on this basis and expect $150 or $200 to come in in this way. On the second matter of the award they are much in favor of such an award being made by the Coaches Associ- ation, if you are able to swing the deal with the Naismith Family to make it a Naismith Memorial, with the cost of the trophy to be paid for by the Coaches Association. I was in Columbus this last Wednesday and had a long talk, with Harold Olsen and we agreed that the purchase and everything incident to the getting of this award should be left entirely in your hands. I am sure that John Bunn would agree to such a plan as well as the Coaches Associa- tion. Olsen and I thought possibly $50 to $75 might do the job. However, this also should be left up to you. At that time 1 stated that I wished to express especial appreci- ation to you for the great amount of work you did as chairman of the convention committee. In view of the work in connection with the Western play-off and the fact that you were successful in having a team in the final game, you had much additional work to do. I therefore, wish to take this opportunity to express to you my very great appreciation for the fine job you did. I feel that we had an outstanding convention and I heard from a great number of the coaches that they thought it was the best convention we have ever had. HICKOX, SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE SECRETARY-TREASURER November 15, 1939 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Director of Basketball Kansas University Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: This will acknowledge the receipt of your communication of November 13. It certainly will be entirely satisfactory with me if you add the name of Mr. Bill Williams, of Drake University, to your convention committee. I am sorry that we did not know of this in time so that Mr. Williams’ name could have been placed on our letter- heads. However, if he is willing to accept the appoint- ment, feel perfectly free to make this addition. I knew of Frank Root's resignation and,as you may recall, took it upon myself to add H. W. Brown of Nebraska University to your committee. However, I am sure that four members will not be too many on this committee. I am slowly, but surely, organizing the pro- gram for the convention this next spring and, as you have a knowledge of the possible set-up in Kansas City and a lot of experience with such organizations, I wish that you would outline a program which you would like to see carried through next March 28-30. I am asking several other coaches to do this and from all of their suggestions will try to make a composite arrangement which I hope will be outstanding. Feel free to make any suggestions you have in mind. With best regards, I an, Very sincerely yours President BTG da January 10, 1940 Mr, Forrest C, Allan Kansas University Lawrence, Kansas Dear Mr, Allan: Before the conclusion of the 1940 convention of the National Association of Basketball Coaches of the United States in Kansas City next March the question of the next convention city will probably bé considered or perhaps definitely determined upon, A most cordial invitation is extended your important group to consider Houston, Texas for your next conven- tion as we are extremely anxious to acquaint your good association with one of America's fastest growing cities where ideal and ample air-conditioned facilities and accommodations will be at your disposal.
