Dear Oaptain Nagles Dr. Laurence Woodruff, the Registrar of the University, has sent me your communication of some few weeks ago. I find that I have been negligent in answering your letter, for which I apologize. I have been out of town for about three weeks on a speaking tour which has taken me away from my desk. I am happy to state that the regulations of the State Board of Education for Kansas have certificates for Clase A high school teacher preparation. Por physical education you should have fifteen semester hours credit in physical education, ten hours of which must be in the field of health, physiology, first aid, or school hygiens. ! I asew'e you we would be delighted to have you at the University of Kansas. I am well acquainted with Conrad Jenuings, director of athletios, Tom Stidham, football coach; and Bill Chandler, basketball coach at Marquette. Tom coached at Oklahoma and also played here at Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kensas, before he went to Northwestern. 5ill Chandler coaches at Iowa State for nine years, in our conference, before going to Marquette. And Gon Jennings I have known for a great number of yeurs. When I was Director of the Kansas Relays Con always brought his Marquette trasksters dow to the Kansas Relays. Each year he had a fine tomm. I also knew Frank Murray, the football], coach at Marquette, before he went to Virginia. I cannot tell you definitely yet just how mich eredit will be given for army physical education work. That has been discussed by all colleges but they have not arrived definitely av the basis for settlement. | Answering your last question, I doubt very much whether men who have re- ceived the 120-houwr baccalaureate degree will be permitted to compete in intercollegiate athletios. There may be an enlargement of the intercollegiate program to permit men of this rank to compete much after the manner of the freshman teams. ‘These would be post-graduate team competition, but it is a little early for that yet. I em sorry that I carmmot be more specific at this time, I will be glad to hear from you if I have not answered fully all of your questions. I assure you we will be pulling for your early return. Sincerely yours, es _ Direotor of Physical Bducation, — FCA:H | | Varsity Basketball coach. Capt. Joel F, Nagle, 0-1583429 Site # 10, Base Air Depot # 2, A.P.0. 635 c/O Pm. New York, N.Y. March 14, 1945, Office of the Registrar: Dear Sir: I would greatly appreciate information as to requirements needed for certificate of teaching in Physical Education, I hold the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy and am a graduate of Marquette University 1940, (College of Journalism.) Credits in Education courses total three hours. Information is also requested as to whether college credits will be given for army physical education work, I have acted in the capacity of Physical training Officer and Base athletic Officer for three years in addition to having attended a number of army physical training schools end coaching clinics, Further request eligibility rulings conceming active. participation in intercollegiate athletics; i.e., will returning veterans who are college graduates and who qualify for Federal educetional benefits be eligible for intercollegiate competitiom? If such is the case, under what conditions? At the present time I happen to be in England, but expect to return in due time. Consequently, I am desirous of obtaining all information pertinent to continuing my education, Thanking you in advance, I remain, yours truly, POA Te / /soel F, Nagle, Captain, A.C. ae: June 6, 1945. Your letter was misplaced in a pile of aorrespondence regarding the basketball gambling expose, and I did not pull At out of the file soon enough. Thank you for the Fitchburg, Mess. clipping. It is nice of the Sportfolio editor to want me as sormissioner, © but I would not be interested in that. I em only interested in helping to get a very strong man, like Douglas MacArthur, J. Edgar Hoover or Tom Dewey. Our athletics would be mish more on the up and up if we had one of these strong characters administering the office. I am sending youa copy of our Jayhawk Rebounds, 4 publication that we get out each month for ow boys oversens. If you are interested, write me another letter giving me your present address, and I will put you on the mailing list for the Rebounds. I regret that I camot advise you as to what course you should take. I imow the operation that you describe, and in mejy cases it hae been highly successful. They take the diso out between the vertebras and the theory is that this lessens the impingement upon the trunk of the nerve that makes up a part of the sciatic a It is an expensive operation and some cases show fine recovery. It may take two months after the operation for this to an but _ oe is generally lessened materially. The’ other is the manipulative treatment such as Dean and I gave Gene. This, combined with diathermy, should do the job. Certainly the sacro~iliac should be worked upon, and work higher on the spine will do iittle if any good. The sacro-iliac is the exciting cause and unless that is oorrescted I camot see much permanent benefit. The diatherny without the specific treatment will not do it. Dean will be back in Lawrence the first of July, and while @ trip from California is rather an expensive one, it would be _ cheaper than an operation. And I believe that we could effect result that we did before. | teed ee ule vou’ Wea ta aothes vox lief from his diffioulty. Dear H Thenks for the letter, and I am glad to kmow that Dean is planning to be home July lst. So far as I am concerned, if he desires to stay three months more and has the ooke from you, it will be o.k. with me. | We will be mighty glad to see Dean when he does arrive. Things are not the same without him in his habitat < the treating room and the gymasium, I kmow he is having a srand experience and it will be delightful to have him back and have him tell us about the ragamffins of italy. What a heritage we possess, ani how often and how little we appreciate all the blessings that we have! — I am glad that you have written Mr. Quigley because I believe Mr. Quigley is going to take over Dean's full time when he re- turns.
