As a hard-pressed young coach with small fast men and one tall lac of 6'-1" I am asking some advice of you.Would you anes’ pressing defense all over the floor, press with my two 5-8" forwards and retreat my other three men or our going into a 2-1-2 zone? We shall obvaously have to rely on @ fast break primarily for offense but how would you supplement it when the defense gets set-- the double pivot attack takes one of my best ak set shots away in the person of the tall lad who is deadly from outside--would you work on free moving of the ball or systematize the attack for situations when defense is set? I have used your fast break rotating drill ,your 2 onl,3 on2 and 5 shadow drills to great extent & find the machine gunning drill very good. I hope you coutinue ,sus success this year er? will greatly appreciate these zew comments from you. Sincerely yours, . neler 40. Dear Phog: I have asked our son to come directly to you concerning the matter of acquiring four tickets to the Kansas—Oklahoma football game October 15th. The reason is that the last time he got tickets for us they were in the end zone on a day when there were not many people at the game, and we did not like it. I believe that some clerk in the department misunderstood the situation, and while I do not expect to have any par- ticular favoritism, I also do not expect to be put clear down at the end, especially on a day when there are not many people in attendance. I therefore would feel it a personal favor if you would supervise this business your- self and see that these tickets are all right. Two of them are for Dr. and Mrs. Kline of Dodge City who will be with us, and two for Mrs. Nelson and me. I suspect I am entitled to some consideration because of my K, but if that places me away out of line to see the game well I would disregard. I am sending Lawrence a blank check so that he will vay you whetever the toll happens to be. Thanking you kindly for the trouble of taking care of this for me, and hoping that I may do some little thing for you some day, again, I am, as ever, Sincerely, % L. S. Nelson, M. D. Dear Phog: In reply to your letter of September 14th, John Selleck informs me that he is holding the five tickets with the rest of the Pittsburgh distribution to be mailed out a week or two before the game. I am sure that he will take care of you in good shape. We started practice last Saturday and are hard at it trying to develop some sophomores to fit in with our three regulars of last year. Niagara University Athletic Aganriation Niagara University, N. Y. OFFICE OF DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS October 15, 1938. Dear Coach: The coaching Ethics Committee of The National Association of Basketball Coaches is attempting not only to improve the ethical practices of our basketball coaches, but also has started a national ~ movement to improve spectator sportsmanship at basketball games. Our committee feels that there is room for improving the ethical standards among basketball coaches, We also feel that in recent years there has been a tendency for basketball spectators to conduct themselves with the bias obnoxious attitude that is so noticeable at professional baseball and wrestling contests. We feel that the proper conduct at basketball games by students will help accomplish the sportsmanship ideals which all educators are anxious to instill in the hearts of their students. Il am enclosing some suggestions which our committee has tpiled for the benefit of our fellow basketball coaches. Will you read them over and make an honest attempt to practice them. iso make an effort to improve the sportsmanship of your the other members of the student body by following some tions which we have made, ing you for your anticipated cooperation and hoping we a successful season, I am Sincerely yours, 1] alla afhn John J, Gallagher, Chairman, Coaching Ethics Committee National Association of Basketball Coaches.
