Future Inactivity Policy of Physical Ed. Department to Improve Health by Exercise By MARTIN PERRY In this day of “curtailment” the ,| University of Wichita physical -}education department is doing its|i share along that line. However, it is not tires, cars,|! production, or hog-raising that this!i department is seeking to curtail. “Curtail inactivity” is the watch-|t word that might well be posted on every beam in Henrion Gym- nasium. Instead of eliminating any part of the intramural program or|f physical education activities, Dr. Laurence Morehouse and the en- tire department is. seeking to ‘fexpand them. This policy has been established for two purposes: 1. In order to get all the men “|in the University to engage in the intramural program. 2. In order to actually improve the health and physical condition of the students by vigorous activities, These purposes are. being ac-is complished by two different means: first, by adding activities to the present program—that is, enlarg- ing the entire set-up; second, by substituting more strenuous activi- ties for the non-stimulating types. Addition of sports involves the completion of the “combative” sports program by adding fencing, and wrestling to the boxing and}; to the physical education: curricu- lum. There are, at present, 25 students enrolled in the boxing course and 16 in the fencing course. Ten lessons in the art of self-|, defense, commonly called jujitsu will be given by Dr. Morehouse|p, later in the spring. i Physical education majors will hereafter take a course in baseball (hard ball) under the direction of Coach Paul Nye. In addition to this, the Intramural Council of the University is considering adding R baseball to the spring intramural |; program. Another endeavor in the expan-|* sion of physical education activity was made in the sport of swim-|} ming. At the request of a group of 15 swimmers who had engaged in previous competition in high school, the athletic department attempted to form a swimming team and provide facilities for training swimmers. But, as all available pools in the city are ‘|being used to their capacity, Uni-|, versity officials found it impossible |~ to obtain a pool. Substitution of more strenuous sports involves the elimination of contract bridge and- foul-shooting from intramural athletics to leave room for the new activities.
