Since the presentation of this report certain modifications have been nade by the Operating Committee from time to time. Theso arc listed as follows: le Tho Bursar of the University has becn added to the committee because of matters involving the handling of finances. 2 The Union Operating Comittee as it has beon functioning, has takon on the nature of a policy forming committee for tho Union Building with a salaricd agent, the Director, to carry out the polivios . On May 14,1936 the Operating Committce went on rocord favoring the unification of the food managonent of Corbin Hall, Watkins Mcnorial Hospital and the entire food sorvice in the Mcmorial Union Building undor one food diroctor. The salary of such a dircctor was to be divided betwoon the throe organizationse The present Director of Food Service, who also holds the rank of Assistant Profossor, camo in the fall of 1936, Prior to this, the management of the building had boon ecarriod on by studoxt managers, on a part timc basis since the yoar 1931-32, The inhcront fault in such nanagerent, is lack of continuity and permancncy in such dircetion. Continucd growth of the building organization required tho services of a director who might dovotc more tine to the administrative probloms of the building and whe would give nore continuity and permancnes to the organizations Therefore, in June 1937, the presont director of Food Service was appointed as Dircetor of Memorial Union. Se In ordcr to further preserve the continuity and to neko for more permanoncy of organization than a yoarly changing operating committee might suggest, ond because « nocd for morc localization and concentration of rosponsibility was folt, the Union Operating Committee on June 3,1937 proposed that a small comiittcce of not more than throo menbors of the University staff plus the director of the building, be formod with power to acte This cormittco would also give more rapidity to action in executive mattors than could be effceted by a large stucont-faculty committec, espocially during tho constructional periods in the summer whon student monbers are likely to be away.
